Giorgio Chiellini, a pillar of strength at the heart of the Bianconeri defence, once again displayed his adaptability and versatile qualities during the victorious 2011/12 campaign.
Whether deployed at left-back, as a central defender in a flat back four, or as a left-sided centre-back in a three-man rearguard, Giorgio responded with the type of performances that make him one of the toughest defenders in the business.
The seven yellow cards amassed throughout the course of the season show that he has successfully tamed any previous propensity for rash challenges, without sacrificing any of his vital competitive spirit.
Conte also values Giorgio’s contribution in the opposite penalty area, sending him forward to contest corners and set pieces. And the giant defender responded in kind by netting twice, against Roma and Catania. He also contributed an assist for Pepe’s goal against Palermo, and is second only to Pirlo as far as completed passes are concerned (2,004).
The 27-year-old made 34 appearances and played 3,197 minutes in the Bianconeri’s memorable run to the Scudetto.
