I actually think since our return to relevance (2012) our record against English teams is pretty good. Only loss that I can recall was against Man United in 2018 at home - a game we should have won by a huge margin if not for shit finishing (and a game that totally changed Allegri as a manager for good imo)

We’ve gone undefeated against City, Chelsea and Tottenham and beat United once. Haven’t played against Pool and Arsenal since mid 00s.

Thanks for having me dig deep and remember of the 4:0 trashing from Chelsea in the 2021 group stages, for me that was the game that truly ended Allegri’s ‘aura’ in European comps for good lol

We were already qualified at the time but it still burns a bit tbh.

Fuck there you go

We also beat them 1:0 at home. So yeah…that was an extraordinary awful peak Allegri second stint terrorball performance.

I also remember we somehow came first in that group, as they choked against Zenit in the last match

That 1-0 win against Chelsea was cursed.

Just looked up the stats for that game- we had 26% percent possession at home.

I was laughing at them and Real and Bayern.
And then I realized we also play Lille and Aston Villa.
Emery scares me. This guy always outcoaches his opponents. But I also think Bayern under Kompany is not a benchmark. Lille's result could be a fluke, don't think Real hit the ground running yet. But yeah our schedule is difficult still. I just hope we win all of our home games.

One good thing about this new format is that suddenly you have to worry about teams like Lille, Benfica and Villa. In the old format you only worry about them if they were in your group, and it would’ve been late anyway.

that's indeed the only true novelty but it completely changes the strategies. previously you had to be better than two other teams. now even though you "only" play 8 matches, you have to keep an eye on dozens of teams. and there's the goal difference which became more important. so defensive minded teams are fucked compared to those with a more attacking approach. i remember juve progressing from a cl group stage with 5 draws and one win lol. progressing with similar results became completely impossible

btw superleague got robbed, it became obsolete before it started now that ceferin simply stole their format

and the only win came in the last round too :touched: legendary. i remember the exact situation, we were in our rented place during university, we were shitting bricks because galata were losing 1-0 to bilbao, but an equalizer would have meant we were out. then all teams finished with 8 points and we had the best goal difference, i don't remember an other group stage like that

neville's "juventus are through, faaaark" face is from that year too lol

It would’ve been great if that season ended with the trophy. Unfortunately we faced United’s golden generation.
We were 2 goals up early in the 1st half. However, they equalized by the end of 1st half. We spent entire 2nd half chasing for a goal, missing chances left and right. Then they scored from a counter-attack at the very end . We played a great match at Old Traford in the 1st leg as well, taking a lead but the game finished 1-1. Iirc they also scored very late in the game. Eventhough it was their golden generation they were incredibly lucky side. How they put 2 goals past Bayern in the final in injury time was unreal. Bayern were a much better side all night.

The fact that they scored twice after going behind 2-0 against mighty Juventus in Turin is what made them a golden generation. I remember watching that game live and I thought the game was over when Inzaghi scored the second goal.

Sure but we were not that mighty that season. We barely passed the group with 1win and 5 draws, DP was out for entire season, which reflected on our results as we finished 7th in Italy. In the QFs we struggled against Panathinaikos. No doubt United were a strong side though but also very lucky with late goals, especially in the final game. Good times though. Hopefully we get to see Juve fighting with best teams again.

Also Ancelloti, abject failure in Europe for us, getting smashed 4-0 in Uefa cup vs Deportivo, then finishing last next season in the CL group stage, only to beat us with Milan 2 years after in the final.
