Massimo Carrera explained the thinking behind the switch to 4-3-3 which enabled the Bianconeri to snatch a late goal in Siena.
With the clock running down at the Artemio Franchi and Juventus struggling to break through a resolute Siena defence, the first-team coach introduced Quagliarella in place of Marrone and deployed the forward alongside Vucinic and Giovinco in a three-pronged strikeforce.
Commenting on the tactical reshuffle, Carrera said: “It was what we required at the time. We wanted to win and went for three up front. Marchisio scored, but that’s the way we play: make the most of the midfielders’ bursts into the box, also thanks to the movement of the strikers.”
Carrera acknowledged that Siena had made life difficult for the Bianconeri but was satisfied at overcoming a challenging final hurdle ahead of next week’s national break.
“Sometimes teams sit back and put men behind the ball. You need to get forward in numbers and be slightly exposed at the back in order to try and breach their defence. We were three on one for their goal and could have paid more attention. Having said that, we spent pretty much the entire game camped in Siena’s half. Playing every three days involves physical and psychological fatigue. We’ll now use the international break to have a bit of a breather. “
