Real Shock: Camacho Reportedly Quits
9/19/2004 10:53:00 PM
Real Madrid coach Jose Antonio Camacho has resigned after the club's poor start to the season, according to reports in Spain.
Cadena Ser radio has announced that Camacho told Real president Florentino Perez he was quitting the Bernabeu hot-seat and was unlikely to reconsider his decision.

After Wednesday’s Champions League calamity – a 3-0 defeat by Bayer Leverkusen – Real lost 1-0 at Espanyol on Saturday.

Camacho, 49, has only been in the post since taking over from Carlos Queiroz in May, and was reportedly unhappy with some of club's purchase of Michael Owen, having identified strengthening of the midfield as a more urgent priority.

Queiroz was sacked after Real only made it to quarter-finals of the Champions League and finished fourth in La Liga in a poor second half to last season that saw them suffer a club record run of consecutive defeats.

As a player, Camacho was a mainstay of the Real side between 1973 and 1989, making more than 400 appearances and winning nine Spanish league titles, three Spanish Cups and two Uefa Cups, as well as 81 caps for Spain.

In may he took over as Real coach for the second time in his managerial career. His first spell lasted just three weeks in the summer of 1998 before a disagreement with former president Lorenzo Sanz persuaded him to resign.

Camacho then went on to coach the Spanish national side for four years, returning to the Bernabeu this year after a short time in Portugal with Benfica.

Cool eh???

Nice job, Perez. We all knew, like you told us, it was all Carlos Quieroz's fault. I guess Carlos must have put a hex on Camacho from the ManU bench... :D

It's their own fault. They spent too much money on superstars who were just past their prime. It worked for a couple of seasons, but now they've got a midfield with Zidane, Figo and Beckham, none of whom can be relied upon to produce regularly any more. They have the same problem as Man United - an ageing midfield - only they spent €100 getting it!

Well, yes they only have themselves to blame. First they have an ageing, cocky midfield and what do they do about it? They go out and buy Michael Owen. When really that money could have been put to better use in bolstering the midfield and defence further.

To be fair, they did try to but Emerson and Viera and failed, I have no sympathy for them though.

Well, I heard that it has something to do with Beckham's signing.
i don't think so ... Camacho felt like he can't go further with this team...

    Profile: Mariano Garcia Remon
    9/20/2004 3:50:00 PM
Goal.com profiles the coach who has been named to replace (temporarily or permanently is yet to be decided) Jose Antonio Camacho. You'll be surprised to know this man is a true legend in Madrid.
Mariano Garcia Remon, also known as the Cat of Odessa, is one of the greatest goalkeepers of Real Madrid’s glorious history.

He was born on September 30th 1950 in Madrid, and is the only Madrid born player to have made a name for himself in between the Real Madrid posts.

He arrived at the Merengues at only 15 years of age and after a brief loan spell at Oviedo, he returned in the 1971-72 season and never left until he quit in 1985.

With Real Madrid he won 7 championships and 4 Champions Cup trophies, but only collected 2 caps with Spain throughout his entire career.

The most famous match played by Remon happened to mark the 100th Champions Cup match for the Madrid side.

It was played against Dynamo Kiev in Odessa, and a flurry a saves by Remon allowed Real to advance to the semifinals of the competition. This was the game that handed him his famous nickname ‘Cat of Odessa’.

Remon’s coaching experience began with Real Madrid's youth squad, and then continued with the first teams of Sporting Gijon, Albacete, Las Palmas, Salamanca, Numancia, and Cordoba.

Camacho and Remon are great friends, and when the former Spain boss took Real over this summmer he immediately indicated Remon as his assistant.

The appointment of Remon as first team boss also arrived as a direct request from the departing Camacho.

    --------------------------

If Camacho couldn't coach such a squad, what makes Perez think this guy will? It should be an interesting season for Los Galacticos. :D
