Martin Caceres has expressed his joy at returning to Juventus for a second spell with the club. The Uruguayan defender has rejoined the Bianconeri on a loan deal and reiterated his desire to win a place in the starting line-up as soon as possible.
The 24-year-old instantly articulated his ambitions during an afternoon press conference in Vinovo, admitting he had missed the sensation of pulling on the black and white stripes.
“It makes me very happy to come back and wear the shirt again,” he began. “The situation is very different to how it was in my last spell. It’s a completely different side, with only five players who were here before. It’s a challenge for me to play for this team and I’ll look to achieve the best possible results.”
Caceres has been handed the number four shirt and is fully aware of its significance. Fellow countryman and Bianconeri legend Paolo Montero won the hearts of the fans with his committed performances, and Caceres admits that the number does carry a certain pressure.
“Paolo Montero wore this shirt for many years,” he continued. “For me it’s a point of pride, but at the same time it brings great responsibility. He made many fans happy while wearing this shirt, and so I hope to do the same myself. I’ll look to do my best.”
The Uruguayan, who joins from Spanish outfit Sevilla, insists he is in good shape having already spent time adapting to Antonio Conte’s training techniques.
“I feel very good from a physical point of view,” he affirmed. “I’ve been here for a week and trained with the squad, but I need to wait for my transfer to come through. Then it depends what the manager says. I can’t wait to get going.”
One of Caceres’ main attributes is his versatility, having operated to good effect in all positions across the back four. But the defender, who has been capped 38 times by his country, believes that breaking into the side is his main goal.
“The role isn’t important,” he concluded. “The only thing that matters is playing in the first place. As far as I’m concerned there’s no difference between one position or another, but if I had to choose my preferred position is central defender. But I’ve played right-back, left-back and centre-back for Uruguay and it’s always been fine. The most important thing is to play.”
