In order to take advantage of all chances to win the European Championship, Italian national squad knows that they can rely on Gigi Buffon. The goalkeeper collected several wins in Italy and a special triumph in a World Championship, therefore he knows that talent isn’t enough to go through such a particular competition. This is the reason why the Azzurri - who are however talented lads - can have some chances against Spain, the reigning European and World champions: “Spain mustn’t fear Italy, they are strong and certainly know their abilities, therefore they don’t fear any side - explained Buffon - In football, stronger sides always start with an advantage, and the Spanish team is very strong, but some times good sides win, therefore we have hopes. In 2004, the Greek squad was superior, but not the strongest side. The same applied in 1992 to the Danish side. We’re here to surprise our rivals and our fans as well, we’re aware and convinced of the possibility to play great games.”
However, the ‘Furia Roja’[Red Fury] are an armoured side: “Who would I take off from Spain? There are so many good players that naming names would mean lacking in respect.”
Italy will use the strong desire of redemption belonging to the whole country in order to respond to the Spanish skills: “Italian fans will be by our side for ever - concluded Gigi - We represent the whole country which, from football point of view, is living hard times. We’ve the chance to involve all the Italian people and make them proud of those lads who wear this light-blue shirt. If I give a look behind my shoulders, I can realize that I’ve been wearing our national colours since 1997: it’s simply great. Current circumstances which characterize today's football can’t help us to find the right serenity, but as we’re real men with plenty of experience, we’ll use them to have a spur more.”
