Vince Gilligan said he hired Bryan Cranston for the part on BB purely because of an episode he appeared on of the X-Files for him.

i think it has to be more than that. cranston is a great actor that never really had the spotlight until recently. he was amazing in malcolm in the middle and pretty much every role he's played regardless of how small. thankfully, now he's being offered bigger roles and i can't wait to see what he brings to them.

Word has it that after season 4, Vince Gilligan said they could do one more season tops in the writing and Cranston was hoping for at least 2. Cranston's logic being that this will be the best role of his career, no matter what comes after.

Of course, +1 season was what they got -- even over the objections of some that the series could have ended at #4.
