Actually I prefer EPL by a mile. My reasons why:
a)Tactics: Let's face it, they do play to win. What strikes me every time is how most English teams use high pressure, where Italian and Spanish teams use low pressure. High pressure is a lot harder physically speaking and usually means you regard yourself as the better team. In the Premier League we have Barton from Manchester City attacking Frank Lampard on his own half. I applaud that.
Are there more defensive errors in EPL than there are in Serie A? You bet there are. Think it through: isn't a defender who has been working his ass off for 85 minutes more prone to making mistakes than a defender who basically had nothing better to do than thinking about eventually, when the other players and the coach have given their blessing, crossing the midfield line when attacking?
b)The players: Now I do know that there probably isn't a nation more passionate about football than Italy, but let's face facts: when Italians play football it looks as if they simply don't care. We lost against Liverpool last year, because we didn't manage to care. Leicester-Tottenham in yesterday's FA Cup was yet another example that English players do care. I admit that this is partially due to the tactics that are being used, but I can't help admiring a league which has 200 Gattuso's instead of one. And no, they're not underdeveloped technically.
I like it when they give their all. I like it when a defender has the guts to try outsmart Henry. I like it when Henry can get the ball and make a run without being torpedoed to Russia.
c)The environment: BBC has Match Of The Day. There, I've said it. It's simply brilliant stuff. Whenever I hear that tune, I jump up and cheer because king football is back again. Last time a cell phone went of during my class and I must say I was definitely not the only one to jump up.
And what about those filled stadiums? Yeah yeah, they're filled with children and families. Well, boohoo, I don't care about hooligans or Ultras. I don't care which history they have of supporting the club. I care about CHILDREN and FAMILIES who want to ENJOY football. And yes, children and families are just as capable of creating a great atmosphere as Ultras are. A different atmosphere, but a great one nonetheless.
Conclusion: Serie A hardly has the entertainment factor EPL has. That never was the goal of Italian clubs anyway. As we all know it's only about the results for calcio fans. Is EPL the lesser of the two when we're talking about technique, tactics and training? I certainly don't think so. It's simply a different football philosophy and quite frankly a football philosophy I love. I myself would suit far better in the Serie A as a player than I ever would in EPL and I might be a Juventus fan, but the Premier League certainly makes my heart beat faster in a way Serie A never could. I LOVE watching Porthsmouth taking on Fulham, but I despise seeing Reggina trying to draw with Parma.
