Then you should watch milan's defending more carefully and notice how their defensive woes have been solved by Kaladze. I'd even go as far as to say Kaladze has been more impressive than Nesta.

i would believe everyone here is being a little bias
cannavaro as the best? he would be in the top 10 but definitely not number one!

1. Alessandro Nesta (a pure defender, sweeper. no nonsense attacks and perfect inch tackles. Im a defender myself in college and this man is my idol)
2. Jamie Carragher (judging from this season's performance)
3. William Gallas (judging from recent performances as well)
4. Fabio Cannavaro
5. Carles Puyol
6. Lucio (Bayern's defense is nothing without him, and certain defenders make their names through attacking and Lucio is among the Baresi of today)
7. John Terry (i'd say he's at the exact rate with Lucio at number 6. not a very good defender but definitely a famous one for scoring goals and as captain for chelsea)
8. Cristian Chivu
9. Walter Samuel
10.Rio Ferdinand (incredible in his best form but too inconsistent)

my number 2 and 3 is not quite the best as i can say ferdinand and lucio should be at those spots but this season they have been impressive and if they could maintain their form, they definitely deserve number 2 and 3

Defenders are only great with who their partnered with. Cos one man only cannot do everything.

If i were to pick the best partnership it'll be Gallas/Nesta

I would actually put Carragher in front of Ferdinand

Actually I would say Kaladze did well in this season as a CB as well after his LB position was taken by Serginho. So 2 problems were solved at the same time. I think Milan will put Jankulovski at LB after Serginho retires.

About Stam, I would still consider him a good defender even though he is slow, and yes he should be a CB as well.

1; Terry...........criminally underated un this forum. Unbeatable aerially, brilliant reader of the game and a threat in the box. The pinnacle of defenders

2: Nesta ------- eqaul to teryy, merely providing more style and less goals.

3: Carragher---- Consistantly solid. No mistakes and a generaly rock at the back

4: Canna-----Heroic defender

5 Puyol---------Not as solid as the rest, but still epic.

The rest fall along way behind.

I would say that Carragher is an underrated defender.

A defensive duo of Terry and Carragher will bring England to new heights

Not likely. Rio will get the nod from Sven....despite rio being more bother about his hair do and dance moves than defending.

1) Terry - Strong, Team leader, Goal scorer and a great marker.
2) Cana - As above but Terry's pipped him.
3) Caragher - Consistently brilliant
4) Nesta - Roughed up defender but only the limelight of milans defense
5) Toure - Everytime I see him I begin to understand exactly why Arsenal are in the CL final.

Wont bother mentioning the rest, I have only included centre backs for my reply.

Not quite. He's getting a fair bit of credit nowadays that Hyypia is getting on in years, and is generally regarded as an excellent defender. I like alot of courage and heart in my defenders; Carragher certainly doesn't lack in that respect.
