Ancelotti begins Juve duel Sunday 14 August, 2005

Carlo Ancelotti assures that tonight’s encounter with Juve “can never be a friendly” as a season-long duel in Italy and Europe begins.
“This will be a real game and both sides will play with the maximum intensity,” said the Milan boss ahead of the traditional Trofeo Berlusconi bash. “Meetings with Juventus are never friendly, especially now we know they’ll be our major rivals for the Scudetto and Champions League.”
The two giants meet every August at the San Siro and there is a strange tradition around this trophy, as some believe the losers go on to take the Scudetto that season. Juve broke that ‘curse’ last year and it picks up where they left off last term in the race for silverware.
“This is our first match of the campaign in front of our home fans and psychologically these are very important because a team must immediately feel it is not inferior to great opponents,” continued Ancelotti.
“Juventus are much stronger than they were last season and not just because of Patrick Vieira. They also have the excellent Adrian Mutu and the experience and solidity of Robert Kovac in defence. I think they are still slightly ahead of Inter in terms of quality and balance.”
Of all the title contenders, the Rossoneri have perhaps gone through the most changes this summer with the arrival of Alberto Gilardino, Christian Vieri, Marek Jankulovski and Johann Vogel, but above all in terms of their tactics.
“We have a very attacking approach to football and with the three-man defence that is further intensified. We need to be more balanced when we use this system.”
With Pippo Inzaghi on the road to recovery and Andriy Shevchenko now fit after surgery to remove titanium plates from his fractured cheekbone, Ancelotti has four world class strikers to choose from.
“Shevchenko will play one half alongside Vieri and the other partnering Gilardino against Juventus. Vieri started training with us before Alberto, so he’s in better physical condition, but I was also pleasantly surprised by how professional Christian is. Sometimes you start to believe in reputations, but he’s very motivated in this new environment.”
Vieri surprised many – including Inter patron Massimo Moratti – when he chose to sign for their local rivals after his contract was terminated.
“He has always been an example of the perfect centre-forward to me and I’ve never had that kind of strong physical striker in my teams,” added Ancelotti. “He’s very different to Gilardino, as one comes towards the ball while the former Parma man uses his marker.”
