Becks snubs Inter
Thursday 11 January, 2007
Real Madrid midfielder David Beckham will not be joining Inter in the summer after he agreed to a five-year contract with LA Galaxy.

The former England captain has been in and out of the Real side this season and sporting director Predrag Mijatovic confirmed that the player would not renew his agreement.

This revived Inter’s hopes of bringing the 31-year-old to the San Siro, but he has now signed himself up for a lucrative MLS stint.

“This week Real Madrid asked me to make a decision regarding my future and the offer was to extend my contract for a further two seasons,” said Beckham to Reuters.

“I considered several options – to stay in Madrid or move to other important English and European teams – but I have decided to join LA Galaxy,” added the player.

It has been suggested that the American club has offered £128m spread over five years to convince Beckham to move across the Atlantic.

“He wants to continue playing football and would like to sponsor this sport in the United States,” said a source close to the player.

“He also wants to live near the football academy that he opened in Los Angeles. He likes the lifestyle in California and believes it’s an ideal place for his family to live in.”

Inter were considering the idea of making an offer for Beckham to replace Luis Figo, who will leave the outfit to join Arabian side Al-Ittihad in July.

I think he will need some more money to buy a bike for Brooklyn :D
One must take a pinch of salt when the quoted value for Beckham is probably more than La Galaxy will earn for next decade or two. I know all this hollywood script all that, but it just doesnt make any financial sense. You just cant increase financial capacity 500% times (just a hyperbole here), because you buy a star. Its not that simply. There must be a framework within which you can propriate the returns, and I am not sure whether MLS has a scheme to make substantial return on Becks presence. Beside, why start bidding against yourself, when (1) you know all the big teams in Europe seem to be somewhat lukewarm to Beckham (that probably speak of his ability ATM, not much at all), and (2) the teams that DO want him badly doesnt have much financial clot. Anywhere around 5m or so, then I think you are in a business for Beckham, and even taking into MLS premium you have to pay due to lower level of competition, no teams will pay 15m in terms of premium.

This report is load of bullshit. Beckham is nearly going to paid $40m per year, which is more than any NFL, NBA, MLB stars. I think people should quote some sensible number not those that bring sensationalism.

im pretty sure ronaldo will join the mls this summer. mark my words

but anyhow, this is a bad investment imo, 495k a weeks wage, nearly 5 times his wage at madrid, and yet the LA galaxy average at about 20,000 attendance a game, its also usually the average attendance of the mls, i cant see how beckham can bring soccer to america, when the likes of pele, beckenbauer (i think, or some famous german player) and djorkaeff have failed in the past, not even alexis lalas cud do much to appeal to the majority.
the mls has a cycle in which its inconsistant in its popularity amongst americans, u have your wc 94 which caused a boom, then from there on till a few yrs ago was a bust, beckham will make a immediate impact, but only in the short run, beckham has made that boom again, but very soon, it will be 'bust'
it is almost impossible for 1 man who is relatively unknown to most americans to make soccer appealing to americans, or to even make it a sport that will inspire americans when there are more popular sports such as baseball, basketball, ice hockey and even nascars

like i said, i doubt beckham will make that impact of soccer to americans, pele, beckenbauer, maradona, best, moore, all failed, the wc 94 only made a small boom, but not consistant enough to have made soccer a seriously taken sport in america. Its like trying to convert english to taking up baseball as a serious sport when they have cricket.

trust me this move is a failure certainly in terms of making soccer appealing to americans

If he wasnt a media bitch,he could have achieved much more as a player. But instead of spending time in training,he was trying out nailpolish.
Thats harsh IMO, media is business, you can't blame him, he shouldn't be criticized just because he's the media's favourit(advertisment).

And lets be honest no one would refuse money, so i wouldn't call him media bitch, thats business my friend.
