like i said, i doubt beckham will make that impact of soccer to americans, pele, beckenbauer, maradona, best, moore, all failed, the wc 94 only made a small boom, but not consistant enough to have made soccer a seriously taken sport in america. Its like trying to convert english to taking up baseball as a serious sport when they have cricket.

trust me this move is a failure certainly in terms of making soccer appealing to americans
I bet to differ, you can't compare this with Pele, Beckenbauer...etc, they are different eras. The American marketing machine back then was nothing as compared today....Becks is already a celebrity in the States....Over here we have this American Airforce radio channel, with sports news every now and then. They NEVER talk about football (our version:D)! Even during the World Cup, the only time I heard something about the championship is when Beckham scored the winning goal in the 16th round (against Costa Rica?)....and it was more about Beckham than the actual match or the World Cup for that matter....Anyways I think that Beckham's move to USA could spark huge interest...

and for the record Marradona didn't play in the states :D

Milan said they would have taken Beckham if he didn't go to the mls. But i more insterested on what Galliani says at the end of the article.

Milan have confirmed that they would have taken David Beckham, had he decided to remain in Europe.
The former England captain confirmed on Thursday that he was quitting Real Madrid and he had agreed a move to America with MLS outfit Los Angeles Galaxy.
Beckham had a host of clubs interested in securing his signature and Milan have admitted that they would indeed have been in the market for him.

"It was a possibility for him to come to Milan," Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani told Gazzetta dello Sport.
"Now it has been decided he goes to Los Angeles. If he had decided to remain in Europe, we would have taken him.
"Instead he has chosen a different life and an adventure in the American championship."
Galliani also revealed that Milan would be adopting a new approach in the future - with the emphasis on youth development, and he compared it to being more like Arsenal, rather than Chelsea.
"We will be more similar to Arsenal than that of Chelsea," he continued.
"We have the intention to look for young people and discover new talents, like a Ronaldinho when he was taken from Gremio - he should not be in Paris Saint Germain or in Barcelona.
"At this point Italian football pays for the economic differences between leagues like Spain."
Galliani also revealed his disappointment that Juventus were not in Serie A.
"Without the Bianconeri in the championship, it is poorer - they are lacking and want their return," he said. "It is like in Spain if they were without Real or Barcelona, or in England without Manchester United."

Indeed. When Pele and the rest of the folks went there the marketing wasn't the king of the world.
I want to compare somethings, for example: glory or money?
I just want to give a little example, Veron (ex Inter, ex Chelsea, ex Manchester United, etc) reject a lot of offers to back to the club he really loves: Estudiantes La Plata. Last season they won the league in a final to Boca. That's glory.
Becks chose money over glory... 20 millons more are going to make a BIG difference in his life? I don't think so. He had the opportunity to play in Milan, in Serie A, a league who can compite (in terms of level) with la Liga.

I saw their last two matches. He looked really happy, as if he wanted to be there the entire time but couldn't. And their fans are crazy! That's why I love the argentinian league.
