Barcelona have confirmed they are in negotiations to sign Portugal playmaker Deco once Euro 2004 ends.
The Catalan club are set to announce the arrival of Sweden striker Henrik Larsson and Deco, who is also being courted by Real Madrid, could join him.

"We're taking the necessary steps but there's still a lot in the air," said director of football Txiki Begiristain.

He added Deco "had demonstrated his desire to play for Barca", but insisted that talks were in the initial phase.

Chelsea were favourites to sign the Brazilian-born star after the arrival of his former coach Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge.

But they appear to have pulled out of the race to sign Deco, who seems certain to leave Champions League winners Porto, leaving bitter rivals Barcelona and Real to fight for his signature.

A Porto spokesman told BBC Sport earlier this month: "There is no agreement with Chelsea to sign Deco. Our President has also told me Real Madrid are interested in Deco.

"There is also a chance that Deco will stay with us next season."

Deco scored the second goal in Porto's 3-0 win over Monaco in the Champions League final in May.

The midfielder has been a key member of Portugal's squad since he acquired Portuguese citizenship in March 2003.

Man, they must be tearing out all of the 98,000+ seats at Nou Camp in search of loose pocket change to come up with some of these bids lately.

Are they printing Euros underground somewhere??

Where would he play !! Barca have Ronaldinho and Giuly now
Giuly can play winger, or striker; as well as playmaker. Furthermore, Deco can play right wing, or playmaker. If I guess correctly, Rijkaard is thinking of putting Ronaldinho and Deco in the midfield together, behind a single striker (Larsson), with Deco on the right and Ronaldinho on the left. It certainly would make for entertaining football, but without Davids or Cocu in the squad, it will be ineffective, because niether Ronnie nor Deco has any ball winning ability and they aren't going to stay back either...

    From the BBC:-

    Deco set for Barcelona move

Portugal midfielder Deco is to join Barcelona, the Spanish club have said.
Barcelona's website said that Deco, one of the stars of Portugal's Euro 2004 campaign, would have a medical on Tuesday prior to signing.

Spanish media said Barcelona would be prepared to pay £8m to sign him from Porto, in exchange for Portuguese winger Ricardo Quaresma.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta said: "We only have to tie up the final details of the agreement."

Chelsea were favourites to sign the Brazilian-born star after the arrival of his former coach Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge.

    From the ESPN Web Site:-

Barca look to wrap up Deco deal

MADRID, July 5 (Reuters) - Barcelona are expecting to close a deal to sign Portugal midfielder Deco this week, according to club president Joan Laporta.
'We only have to tie up the final details of the agreement,' Laporta told Monday's sports daily El Mundo Deportivo. 'I'm quite optimistic and believe that Deco will end up becoming a Barcelona player.'

The Spanish sports press said Barca were prepared to pay Porto 12 million euros ($14.75 million) plus Portuguese winger Ricardo Quaresma in exchange for the Brazilian-born 26-year-old.

Laporta said the possible inclusion of Quaresma in the deal was one of the details yet to be agreed.

Deco played in Portugal's 1-0 defeat by Greece in the final of Euro 2004 on Sunday and is expected to make an announcement about his future later this week.

As well as playing a crucial role in Portugal's run to the final, Deco also inspired Porto to victory in the Champions League, earning the man of the match award in their 3-0 victory over Monaco in Gelsenkirchen in May.

Laporta also said he did not think Dutch midfielder Edgar Davids would remain with the Catalans.

'I don't believe that Davids will play for Barcelona next season,' said the Barca president. 'We are looking for another player that has his sort of defensive characteristics.'

Davids, who was part of the Dutch squad that reached the Euro 2004 semi-finals, joined Barca on loan from Juventus during the winter transfer window.

He played an important part in their late season renaissance that catapulted the team into second place in the league.

The midfielder's contract with Juventus ends in the close season.

    Ronaldinho Deco Giuly.

If that means that they have to leave Xavi out, they are making a big mistake.
