I seriously couldn't believe when I heard about this. Don't know if any of you have heard about it, but in the 1994 Shell Caribbean Cup, Barbados was winning 2-1 and they thus had to score an intentional own goal in order to advance because of a weird rule. For the last five minutes of the game they then had to go and defend both nets to a) not give up a goal and b) not allow Grenada to score an own goal

Yeah, it's true. I think they had to win by 3 goals. It wasn't going to happen, so they forced a draw and won on penalties, which, for the purposes of goal difference calculations, was worth a 3-0 win. Terrible rule, and abused in a very entertaining way.

This is quite hilarious. All I can think of is how difficult and confusing it would have been for the linesmen to make offside decisions.

For example, two players passing the ball out of 'defence' (i.e. away from their opponent's goal) could easily be caught offside if the pass is 'backwards' (i.e. towards their opponent's goal), in which case the other team would receive a free kick from that position.

The other team would try to score into their own goal from the resulting free kick, which would lead the 'defending' team to line up a wall in front of their opponent's goal.

This is getting horribly complicated already, but imagine the comical situations that would arise if two teams were trying to score into their own goals and prevent their opponents from doing the same

as ahmed said above, I think it happened in a game between Thailand and I forget the other team when whoever won had to face Vietnam so they both tried to score own goals and both teams got fined for breaking the spirit of the game and I think some player got a lifetime ban
