the missing of great defenders in the shortlist is surely due to the "mainstream"-biased creater of the list.
it would be very fine if there very more defenders, goalkeeper and even defensive midfielders on the shortlist ... i anyone of them would win it would show that the creator of the list is not just some brainless "football is scoring goals"-moron...
i think if someone does not have great knowledge and would read in the newspaper "defender xy given balon d'or" it would lead to more understanding under the average folks. they might think "hey, until now i thought football was all about doing fancy tricks and scoring goals, but when these pundits vote a defender for the golden ball it might mean that defending is also an essential and important part of the game"...
right now it's only a joke ...
if you analyse really closely it is even more hard to be a good defender than a good attacking player.
if you are a striker and score 3 goals out of 10 chances you're hailed as hattrick hero
if you are a defender and let your opponent go past you with the ball 3 times out of 10 than you are the next boumsong... not to mention if we did compare the success ratio 1:1 and the defender did only stop the striker on 3 opportunities out of 10 ...

Excuse me but your comparison is just totally unfair, why not compare a defender making 3 goal bound clearances to a striker's hattrick? That is fairer.
I did not agree with the 30 players selected as it was criminal to ignore DP and Iniesta especially whilst including Pepe, Drogba, Rooney and Etoo on that list but the importance attached to Giorgio Chiellini is bordering on the farcical.
He played 3 matches in the Euros and though they might have been very good, Italy actually went out in the 2nd round so that would greatly diminish his chances and unlike Pepe, Juventus his club came third in a league that is losing its sheen seasn by season.
Not to mention he is not a marquee player so that did not help his cause either

and i believe that joke of a player ashley cole is on the list. hes not even a decent player, certainly beyond me how hes on the list and not those above mentioned, like i said i glorify defenders because to me they are as much part of the game as attackers are, they are the ones who also define the scorelines, its almost like the people drawing up the shortlist only thought about rio, vidic and carvalho, and forgot about the rest of the real top class defenders who DO make a difference on the team like chiellini, and not someone like pepe. Im not calling for chiellini to be in there or at least a worthy rival to the trophy itself because hes a juventus player, its because he is perhaps the best bloody defender ive seen since cannavaro (in his prime) if not even maldini or claudio gentile before that, and for someone who wasnt even originally a cb, deserves far more recognition

just read the "i want this player in juve"-thread and you will find huge amounts of players that do tricks but fuck up in front of goal or just dont deliver

there are not always chances to put your leg between a shot that is goal bound (if i understood you correct) for a defender ... but a chance is a chance, meaning the possibility to score is pretty good. a striker can create a chance for himself when he has the ball and only a defender on the direct way to goal.
as defender you can not create that chances to make clearances, at least if you do not deliberately give the attacker the opportunity to shoot
it is right, that in defence the physical aspect of the game can help you much so it is easy if you have the right physique to be a good defender ...
but on the other hand as striker if you have pace you also have the advantage on your side without having to be great technically
often you use the "duel statistics" (google translation for "zweikampfstatistik") for the judgement of defenders and why should that be wrong ?

Actually you would find that defenders get away with being tactically inept by using their pace to get them out of trouble like Micah Richards, Patrice Evra, Ashley Cole and so many defenders in the EPL.
Chiellini and Legrottaglie also make use of their pace to get them out of trouble as their decision making is very suspect at times.
I cannot think of too many strikers that have pace but not technique and being regarded as top class because scoring goals is 1 of the if not the hardest part of football and the great goalscorers quite rightly get the headlines
