3-4-1-2
--------------Buffon
------Astori - Bonucci - Chiellini
Maggio - Pirlo - Marchisio - Balzaretti
-------------Cassano
--------Balotelli - Di Natale

Solid at the back and midfield with wing backs who know how to defend when required.. Cassano to pull the strings in trequartista role and an experienced striker like Di Natale is needed vs Spain to make the most of our opportunities. If need be, we can push Cassano up as a third striker and force Maggio and Balzaretti to stay back when were all out attacking to cover the defence. Alternatively, replace Cassano with Di Natale and have Giovinco play as a support striker.. but keep Montolivo as far away from the pitch as possible!

Astori will not play definitely, he will be used as sub only
well Astori is Barzagli's direct replacement if he is deemed unable to play. So it's either De Rossi or Astori in a back 3, with Ogbonna as backup.

I kind of feel more safe with De Rossi as a CB, does anyone else get that feeling? He'll be more calm, he has the experience, and will have the composure IMO.
@francesco that line-up looks good, but if we play a 3-4-1-2, it'll be to accommodate Montolivo as a trequartista. I'd be a bit worried in the midfield though. We'd either have not enough width or too many holes in the centre.

I Wonder why it has to be any problems in midfield? If playing 4 3 3 we could have Pirlo De Rosi Marchisio(Montolivo) trio, where as minimum two players are WC. Chielini and Barzagli gonna provide good depth in defence. In attack I put my hopes on Di Natale. He is a great scorer, and it is his chance to shine before the end of career. Add Pirlos genius and everything will be OK =)

Because Barzagli picked up an injury, and Italy doesn't have an adequate or experienced enough CB to take Barzagli's place.

I also think de Rossi at defense is a good choice, whenever Roma played him as CB, he did well. In Euro2008 the CB partnership that held Spain at bay for 120 minutes (and it looked like they could do it all day) was Panucci - Chiellini, leadership and experience is unvaluable at tournaments like this and I think de Rossi can provide that. In the midfield Prandelli still has Nocerino, Motta, Montolivo and Giaccherini, who can all provide different qualities and surely CM's is Italy's strongest point, playing de Rossi out of position won't leave a hole in his natural position. I'd play it like this against Spain:

------------------Buffon
-------De Rossi-Bonucci-Chiellini
Maggio-Motta-Pirlo-Marchisio-Balzaretti
-----------Cassano-Balotelli

Exactly my thoughts, and exactly what I want to see.

against Spain it won't work I guess. We will be having problems on the flanks because Maggio and Balzaretti won't cope with Spain players if they will be the only men on their flanks. We need more depth playing closed football because we have no chances to capture midfield =(

Spain are kind of like the Azzurri to be honest. Lacklustre attacks and defences but quality midfields. It'll be a good game IMO.

Solid at the back
Solid? SOLID ???
Are freakin kidding us???
We are talking about Italy's rearguard, what was used to be the best in the world for decades!
And are you calling the utter compromises, named, Astori, Bonucci and Maggio as SOLID?

Solid in what sense exactly, we are talking about international level, not how calciopoli has turned serie A.
It is a disgrace that the NT cannot find anything better than that.
I red a relevant article in goal.com http://www.goal.com/en/news/2898/euro-2012/2012/06/06/3150824/where-is-the-next-cannavaro-nesta-maldini-italys-defensive
ocusing exactly in the point of criticism i have been pointing out in the past 6-7 years.
Juventus is probably the team that has suffered the most because of this.
In our desperate effort to keep a fully Italian team, we made huge compromises in cash and performance, just because we deny to accept this crude reality.
Italy does not produces uality defenders anymore!
We overpay for the available ones, keep giving them chances so that they can benefit, from the work of their other teammates, but it never pays back!
The Molinaros, Stendardos, Mottas, Grossos, Bonuccis, Legros only give us more frustration.

Enough with it already, having NT cappers is a reason to be proud of, when there is competition among great players, not among players like Astori, Maggio and Bonucci.

When there was competition among Canna, Zambro, Nesta and Maldini, with Milan and Juve trying to hold as many of those gems as possible.
Then yes, it was justified, but seeing us now drooling over the Bonuccis, Maggios and Astoris is just disgusting.

And i believe by overrating these mediocre players, we make things worse for Italy and our teams in the long run.
Hopefully this summer ppl will finally realise what i ve veen talking about all those years.

Pll, we have a major hole in the back, what used to be our strength, what we could rely upon, is no more!
Things have changed, we must adapt, we must do smth about it!

PS: told ya that giving away Balza is a fatal mistake, exactly because of that, after all these years of searching, the best we can do is DC and Caceres...
The army of my haters call me racist for saying so many years that Italy is not producing defensive talents, they are so blind and biased, they cant see beyond their nose, hey look, its EURO 2012 and the best Italy can do is field Balza as a starter...:alen::alen:
