Well, they managed to find and open his safe, not something ordinary men would be able to do. They knew location of the safe, had the right tools for the job and most importantly they had an information when no one will be in the house, suggesting they kept tracking their movements for a while. I doubt that he didn't have an alarm, but probably disabled as well.
