If you've played football invariably this has happened before, when you draw your leg back to shoot any contact against it makes you end up looking like a complete retard, usually missing the ball completely, sometimes into the turf.

Refs generally don't give free-kicks for it around outside the area, so I wasn't expecting a penalty for it.
