Midfielder Patrick Vieira has insisted he had wanted to end his career with former club Arsenal before he was sold for £13.7m to Juventus in the summer.

Vieira told the News of the World: "Arsenal did nothing to keep me. The bottom line is they could have kept me.

"I saw myself finishing my career at Arsenal. I thought I would be at the club for another three years.

"I don't know if they needed the money for players or the new stadium, but it was their decision to sell me."

The 29-year-old moved to Juventus in the summer after eight years at Highbury.

He has enjoyed an impressive start to the season with Juventus, who lead the Serie A table.

Prior to joining the Italian club, Vieira had been repeatedly linked with a move to Spanish club Real Madrid.

Vieira added: "One moment I was on the phone to Arsene Wenger discussing our expectations for the season.

"The next I was told by David Dein there was an offer from Juventus and the club was neutral about my decision to accept it or not.

"Neutral? What was that was about? There had been offers before, particularly from Real Madrid.

"And every year it had been made plain Arsenal wanted me to stay.

"Had they talked to me the way they did the previous summer, there is no doubt I would still be at the club. But they didn't."

Well, he certainly cant seem to get it out of his head. Its pretty obvious he misses highbury. Its only supplemented further by the fact that he still feels so strongly about his situation.

He really has to lose this garbage. It's unhealthy.

He sounds like the guy who continually disses on the girlfriend he's still in love with after she dumped him.

the reason for all this babbling that's coming from vieira these days is simple. he's trying to promote his new book. and what better way than to stir up some controversy and point some fingers?

Boo hoo. What was Wenger supposed to do? Fall on his knees crying and pray to Vieira to stay?! Vieira negotiated with Real Madrid the year before, so I can imagine they were growing tired of Vieira's constant loyalty changes.

And the yaer before that, and the year before that. Yes, Vieira wasn't exactly a model of contentment. He was also at his peak saleability. I wasn't very surprised to see him go and I don't think Arsenal will miss him much. Their early-season woes were down to missing Henry, and to a lesser extend Cole and Campbell.

he was the captain of arsenal, he was supposed to talk too much to the press. but now he should know that at Juve he should zip his mouth a little and concentrate on playing football.

very valid point, but its the english press that keeps bringing this up all the time not him because arsenal are suffering without him.

I dont know how many of you'll read this article published recently, about Vieira considering a switch to Manchester United as a possible replacement to Roy Keane, who by the way, this news is just in has quit Manchester United.

Won't happen - it's just tabloid talk.

I always thought that Arsenal was such a loyal group, but with Henry, Vieira, Campbell, Cole, Ljungberg, Pires and Wenger ALL admitting to want a new challenge... I guess the success held them together, but now that Chelsea looks certain to win the league for the next 300 years it's every man for himself.

And with Keane leaving Man Ud in mid-season when the transfer market isn't even open, I guess loyalty doesn't exist anymore in English football :(
