Juventus’ ambitious redevelopment plans for the Stadio Delle Alpi have been put on hold with the prospect of Serie B football lingering over the Bianconeri.
After a meeting on Monday between Juve’s new directors and Turin mayor Sergio Chiamparino, the stadium development plans have been put back by at least two years.
The £100m development was put in motion by the Triade of directors – Antonio Giraudo, Luciano Moggi and Roberto Bettega – who have now left the Turin club.
At present, the Delle Alpi holds 67,229 spectators but is widely criticised for its poor visibility and lack of atmosphere – a problem largely attributed to the running track.
The proposed works would have reduced the capacity to around 40,000 and removed the running track, leaving a more fan-friendly arena.
Next season Juve will share the 25,370 capacity Olympic Stadium with Serie A and city rivals Torino.
Work on converting the Winter Olympics venue into a football arena is due to finish on August 15. Both sides plan to use the Delle Alpi for the games that will attract the greatest interest.
The outfit’s demotion problems have also affected the club’s Mondo Juve facility which was designed to combine the club’s training needs with an entertainment and retail complex.
Juve nervously await the final Calciopoli verdict which is due to be delivered tonight at 20.30 hours local time.
