Defeated us on penalties in 2003? :wth:

We weren't in the CL when they won in 2007. I don't understand your statement of them being miles ahead of us.
I didn't say they were miles ahead of us, I said they were a step ahead of us. Besides, in that CL final, they were the better team. Of course, they have had the easier way to the final and I must say that with Nedved, we could have had a better shot at winning that damn trophy.

The CL final in 2005 will always ruin the image of that Milan team, also seemed to not be winning several trophies a season like the Barcelona team is.

Capello's Juventus was horrific to watch in the CL.

Pirlo is WC quality but he's very specialized so he can go from the most influential player to the least depending on the set-up.

And the noCL era 2000's kind makes me sick. Even worse than the last 2 years.

And Pirlo was the most instrumental player in that oh-so-great team. ;)
the good thing about that team was that all players in midfield were equally instrumental as they offered very diff qualities and that way complemented each other.

Pirlo's role was obviously important but not any more than that of any of his fellow mids - his presence on the field would have hurt the balance of the team, if not for a player like Gattuso.
Seedorf, on the other hand, provided qualities that are rare in players in general - toughness and extra muscle in defending, coupled with great ball-possession skills and creativity in attack to compensate for Pirlo's lack of physicality and speed. It was the dutchman who provided the balance in that team as without him, that Milan would have been either too easy to penetrate with another creative mid in his place, or too defensive and lacking in creativity with another defensive mid instead of Seedorf.
Kaka, of course, provided the penetration going forward, which compensated for Pirlo's, and later on Seedorf's (once he passed the 30 year-mark), lack of speed and explosiveness.

As someone said above, Pirlo is a very specialized player and needs to have the right players around him, otherwise he can quickly turn into the Achilles heel of his team, especially now when he is no longer in his early to mid 20s

Yes, but I think he was the only player who was indispensable to that team. Sure, the absence of Gattuso, Kaka or Seedorf would've been felt, but there was still Ambrosini, Rui Costa, Serginho, etc. who could fill in temporarily for those players; for Pirlo, there was no peer, nobody capable of replacing him; you would have to change the whole approach.

Milan players in Gazzetta today speaking higly of Pirlo. Nesta: "I miss him so much, he is a champion on and off the pitch".

I still think Milan made a mistake of letting him go, his presence could have meant much for them.

Forza Andrea!

Gattuso recalls how one day Nesta and Pirlo nicked his phone and sent a prank text to Braida (Milan DS?) offering his sister in exchange for a new contract
