Andrea Pirlo, the Italian midfielder magician, is on the cusp of signing a contract with New York City Football Club, the Daily News has learned.

Pirlo will represent the MLS expansion club’s third Designated Player, joining David Villa and Frank Lampard to form one of the most expensive rosters in league history.

Despite just coming off a long club season with Juventus and this month’s UEFA Champions League final, Pirlo will be available for the expansion club within a few weeks, a source close to the situation said.

The summer transfer window opens July 1 and Pirlo has to get out of the one year remaining on his deal with Juventus. His salary with NYCFC will be about the same amount as Lampard’s and Villa’s, or between $5-$6 million per year, a source said.

The 2006 World Cup winner was at Yankee Stadium on Saturday, taking in his future home while spotted with Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano. The signing, which is inevitable but not yet complete, gives NYCFC the most accomplished attacking group in MLS, and also raises questions about the advanced age of the core.

Villa, 33, Lampard, 37, and Pirlo, 36, are following the David Beckham path of European stars crossing the Atlantic past their prime. But Pirlo is presumably less affected by age as a deliberate ball wizard and a free-kick specialist. The bearded maestro is known for his cool demeanor and catchphrase, “No Pirlo, No Party,” although America might prove a difficult adjustment after playing his entire career in Italy.

When rumors surfaced recently about Spaniard Xavi joining NYCFC as the third DP, coach Jason Kreis declared that the midfielder was not an ideal fit because of his age (35) and position (redundant with Lampard arriving in July).

Kreis had a different opinion when asked last week about Pirlo, who plays more withdrawn in the midfield. Still, the fact that Kreis was pining for a younger DP is further evidence that the parent club, Manchester City, is running the show.

Pirlo will join an NYCFC team (4-5-7) riding a three-game winning streak and finally exhibiting positive signs after a difficult beginning. He just missed out on a storybook ending to his career in Europe, losing to Barcelona, 3-1, in the Champions League final.

Report: Pirlo agrees New York deal
By Football Italia staff

Reports in the U.S. claim Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo has agreed a deal to join New York City.

The Italian international has a year remaining on his contract with the Bianconeri, but has been linked with a move to MLS this summer.

The New York Daily News says believes that Pirlo, who is the Big Apple at the moment, has agreed a deal with New York City worth between $5-$6m [€4.4-€5.3m] per season.

The news outlet believes the World Cup winner would join up with the American side within a few weeks, joining Frank Lampard and David Villa.
