Giaccherini’s winning run and another brilliance from Del Piero. The public at the Juventus Stadium celebrating their favourites again. Several images remained after the wonderful victory over Roma.
However, today the success over the Giallorossi has already entered both the memory and the history books. And from these books, an auspicious statistics came out. In 15 previous ‘Coppa Italia’ encounters which saw Juventus against Roma, the 3-0 result for the Bianconeri occurred three times. It also happened in 1982/83 and 1994/95 seasons, always in Turin and always in the quarter finals. Moreover, in both cases, at the end of the competition, the cup was added to the Juventus’ Trophy Room.
The first match occurred in 1983. The first season after the World Championship ended with the Coppa Italia. Being characterized by the presence of several World Champions, and being also tired after a very long season and depressed following the defeat in the Champions’ Cup occurred against Hamburg, Juventus were required to play the Italian titled Roma. It was the chance for an immediate redemption which proved to be very resounding. On 1 June in Turin, the Bianconeri overcame the Giallorossi thanks to Cabrini, Platini and Boniek. On the occasion of the return match in Rome, Tardelli and Boniek gave Juventus another victory. In the following two weeks, Trapattoni’s men also beat Inter (semi-final) and Verona (0-2 at the Bentegodi, 3-0 at the Stadio Comunale), thus lifting their seventh cup for the national competition.
Juventus’ road towards their ninth success in 1994/95 season saw three goals scored against Roma. Lippi’s side obtained every possible positive result. In ‘Coppa italia’, the double match against the Giallorossi occurred in winter. On 1 December 1994, the clash took place at the Delle Alpi, and a double from Vialli in the first half along with a penalty from Ravanelli at the end of the match allowed the Bianconeri to go through the competition overcoming a rival who finished with nine players due to Carboni and Petruzzi’s sending off. However, the return match in Rome wasn’t easy, but the 3-1 (a penalty again, from Ravanelli) achieved by the Giallorossi wasn’t enough. Juventus went through and overcame Lazio (semi-final), clinching the victory of the competition in the final occurred against Parma, their absolute opponents in a never-ending season.
Now, it’s too early for predictions, we don’t know the result of the current TIM Cup edition and if Juventus will lift their tenth cup. But yesterday’s 3-0 over Roma will certainly be a very nice memory.
