I had high hopes for that guy.

--

You guys follow this sport way more than I do. Is there any hope for Philly to be competitive next season? I'm worried about QBs mostly now, even though the defense has been the weak spot lately (and QB too).
Oh yeah, we will definitely be competitive. In the end, we're fixing our defense and that is the most important thing.

They signed Torrey Smith, and are in the running for Reggie Bush.

If you wanted more speed on this offense, you would certainly get it with those two.
I'm all for speed, but these aren't the guys I would have gone after. I find Torrey Smith too inconsistent, and one dimensional; I wouldn't have spent all that money on Smith, even if I think he seems like a great guy, with excellent intangibles. Certainly scored the rock often last year, hopefully he proves me wrong.

Bush is a solid move for depth, but the guy has always had a difficult time staying on the field. Not sure that's going to change now that he's 30, but at least he's moving back to grass for a guaranteed 8 games. I'm glad they made this move given the current market, but I would have kept Gore. I do really like Reggie's skill-set, he could be a lot of fun to watch next year -- if his body is right.

For somewhere around about 2M dollars more for each of the next two seasons, we could have kept Iupati and Gore -- and that would have been my preference. I sure hope Brandon Thomas is the real deal.

Big draft coming up, no doubt!

Bush hardly missed any time in the three seasons prior to that, and he will be part of a RB by committee, something that wouldn't have happened if they re-signed Gore, which, by the way, I didn't have a problem with them not re-signing him, considering that he is 32 years old now.

Smith forces the safeties to move back in coverage at least 2-3 yards from where they normally were. They now have a receiver that can beat them over the top that you have to pay attention to.

Think about this. Why is it that Vernon Davis couldn't take advantage of his favorite route, the Seam? Because the safeties were closer to the line of scrimmage than in previous years. It is no coincidence that he had one of his worst seasons last year.

As far as Iupati is concerned, it happens. they weren't going to pay a guard 8 million a year, especially considering that they are now moving away from the type of blocking schemes that played into his strengths anyway.

Granted. But Vernon Davis was also hurt fairly early in the season, those health/conditioning issues lingered, and he couldn't get separation from anyone last year. The offensive line had new faces and injuries, which put a lot of pressure on the passing game in general.

I get that Torrey can take the top off. I'm just not a huge fan of the player -- even though I really like his character. But hey, maybe his chemistry with Kap will be there. They obviously like each other.

Gore is 32, but all heart and soul, and he's been very consistent with his production. I don't think re-signing Gore would have meant Carlos would see the same number of touches he saw last year; he was always going to see an increase in touches, he's improving. Anyway, Reggie is a good player, we'll see how he fares. He's definitely a complimentary player, and he could have a big impact depending on how he's used.

Mike Iupati is definitely not a one trick pony, he's one of the best guards in the league, and he's only 27. 3 consecutive Pro-Bowls. Anyway, they didn't pay him, and our direct rival is going to benefit. It happens, but a lot of the time teams regret it afterwards. That is basically the new market price for a top guard in his prime, and he was well liked, from everything I've read/seen.

We'll see how things unfold, but Baalke's got some big shoes to fill.

Iupati was also inconsistent as fuck in the last two seasons. He is really good but I don't blame us for not paying him. Pro bowls for the most part are a popularity contest. He was really bad this year.

Keeping Gore would have meant having the same type of skill sets that last year's stable had. That isn't their plan this year. They want RB'S who have different styles that can be used to their advantage. Different offensive philosophy this season. They need more athletes on the field, and smith and Bush, and a returning Kendall Hunter, will help with that.

The whole offensive line was poor, but Iupati hasn't been "Iupati" since the Super Bowl. They will be a younger and athletic line with Marcus Martin having a full year under his belt at Center, or if Kilgore comes back healthy, he and Thomas can fight it out for the LG spot.

The only player I am upset about losing, from a football perspective, is Willis.
