1972/73 championship remains among the most thrilling seasons in Juventus’ history. The great finale occurred on the 30th game seemed a Hitchcock’s movie, but the plot developed over the other 29 matches was quite complicated as well.
Juventus were the reigning Italian champions, but didn’t started the new season very well and on 10 December 1972, when hosted by Palermo at the ‘Favorita’, they were four points behind the leader Lazio, being also chasing after Inter and Milan.
However, the two last games occurred at home gave some positive signals: following the 2-0 against Cagliari and the 2-1 over Fiorentina, they had the chance to be back in the run towards the top of the table. But the success over the Rosanero wasn’t obvious because the Sicilians started with a special drive, and for the first 30 minutes played good football and had several goal chances. However, the champions’ pride came out and Juventus imposed themselves. In particular, it happened thanks to José Altafini, one of the new summer signings, along with Dino Zoff. His soft shot towards the lower corner in the 36th minute of the first half allowed the Bianconeri to clinch two important points in order to climb the table. Moreover, this victory was fundamental on the occasion of the last game of the season, when Juventus had 43 points as well as Lazio, behind Milan with 44.
The Rossoneri will be defeated in Verona and the Biancocelesti in Naples. Therefore, Juventus’ win at the ‘Olimpico’ against Roma (2-1) allowed them to clinch their 15th title, just being one point ahead…
