The Allievi Nazionali’s playoff hopes were dealt a setback after they slipped to defeat in this afternoon’s rescheduled fixture against Empoli. Fabrizio Del Rosso’s side were punished by Riovini’s early strike and failed to find a leveller despite an impressive second half showing.
Del Rosso praised his team’s efforts following the final whistle: “We paid the pride for our sluggish start. Empoli gave us difficulties and took the lead through Rovini’s wonder goal. The lads reacted well, they created many chances and also struck the bar twice. It’s a shame to have lost after putting in such a performance. We’ve now got three games to go which are fortunately three direct encounters. We’ll give our all to try and secure at least third place in the group.”
With three games remaining, Fiorentina sit top of the pile with 50 points followed by Empoli on 48, Torino 45, Sampdoria 44 and Juventus 41. Yet the Bianconeri still have to face the Blucerchiati at home on Sunday before locking horns with Torino and Fiorentina. Three victories from these fixtures could keep their playoff hopes alive.
