Giles and Bremner are both worth considering. It's unlikely anyone here's seen them play though - they were at their peak in the 70s.

Gentile is a definate. I've seen the footage of him 'marking' Maradonna. I'm not sure what it was, but it wasn't football.

Which Saunders is this as the only Sauders that comes to mind is definitely Dean Saunders and he is far from nasty

No way is he as bad or does he have a mean streak in him like Stoichkov did as he was just mean and moody
That cannot be GilsGrimandi as he is not mean if that is indeed Gils, but like Gray pointed out Muscat is a bit of an animal and so is Danny tiatto

Duncan Ferguson and Edmundo are definitely mad

I would put Gentile there because for me he was very nasty as a defender not cultured at all as his tackles were very blatant and no way does Couto have anything on him

How can you have a nasty team with Mihalovic there and did you not read about Materrazi punching Cirillo last nite, even thou Materazzi was not even playing

    Lee Bowyer is a bastard

Hard players, nah they don't make him like that anymore like so many British players like Dave Mackay, Chopper Harris etc . hat of Benetti the very hard Italian midfieler, Pasarella the only player who scared one of the hardest midfielders I know, Graeme Souness by telling Souness he would get him back in the corresponding fixture at home for kicking of the strikers, think it might have been Ramon Diaz when they were both at Fiorentina and Soey was at Sampdoria
Yes it is ex-Liverpool player Dean Saunders. I was struggling to find a mean striker so asked for advice and some english friends of mine guaranteed to me that he is an actual meanie. But Duncan Ferguson is indeed probably fitter for the job.

Grimandi is the Arsenal Grimandi - I think his first name might be "Gilles", yes. I have seen him play only a couple of times (notably against Lazio in the CL), but that was enough for me to spot the very high degree of bastardness that nourishes him : provocations, nasty tackles and kicks are all part of his répertoire.

Gentile was more than just a nasty defender. The man did have some real talent, unlike, say, Bruno. I see him as a prior version of Vierchowood in fact : he was the typical defender to whom the coach would say : "see that player? I want you to make him disappear from the field". And Gentile would abide and always fulfill his mission. He would literally not let said player breathe, closely following his tracks and sometimes resorting to tackles that crossed the line of correctness, but I believe he did it more out of self-determination than just pure nastiness (unlike, again, Bruno). He really was just an old school defender, who simply knew how to best do his job without violating the rule book too much. Otherwise he would not have been able to mark the likes of Maradona, Zico and Rumenigge without being shown the red card.

Mihailovic deserves a spot ahead of Couto, granted.

I wrote this before the Killerazzi aggression, but somehow I still think he lacks something to be eligible. It must be because he plays for Inter.

Lee Bowyer is a nasty bastard.

If thats Johhny Giles, I saw him ages ago but do not remember that much about him but Bremmner is one of my faves, in fact Leeds is just a breeding ground for thugs as far as I am concerned as u can add Norman Hunter, Lorimer, and the rest of them to the thuggery intimidating players the likes of Bowyer , Harte and Smith now aspire to be
Vierchewood was someone I was very happy when I saw in pain as he inflicted so much pain on his opponents
Edmundo's antics on and off the pitch is the stuff of legends, how you can leave your team, Fiorentina, to go off to Rio for the carnival , when they had just lost Batistuta to injury whilst they were leading the league is beyond me and then going to give his monkey booze to get the monkey drunk, only Edmundo could do that

The Spanish did have some nasty players in the 70s and 80s most notably Goiccochea the butcher from Bilbao.

Bergomi was no angel either and his moustache made him look even more sinister

When the referee wasn't looking, he'd kick, elbow and pinch his opponents. When he'd knocked someoen to the gorund, he'd make a big show of helping him up, but he'd in fact be digging his nails into the palm of his opponent's hand. That's a thuggish defender.

Harte a thug? No way - he's just crap. :)

Yes, it was Johnny Giles I meant. In addition to his tackling (he got into an arguement with Dunphy, his co-analyst on the TV here over a suggestion that he'd ended a player's career with one particular deliberate tackle), he could drop a ball on a penny forty yards away. That Leeds team was very impressive, but, as you say, very dirty.
