Tifoso deluso mette Secco all'asta

Blog: Saved by the Mell
Juventus have netted Olof Mellberg for next season, but Richard Godden believes that they should have pulled out all the stops to bring the defender to Turin immediately

On Monday afternoon, Juventus finally confirmed that Olof Mellberg would be arriving at the Stadio Olimpico in the summer from Aston Villa. It represents the end of a transfer saga which has been ongoing for months, but one which should have had a different ending. The simple fact of the matter is that the Bianconeri need the Swedish stopper immediately to plug the all too frequent holes which are appearing in their rearguard.

I’ve read and heard plenty of people’s opinions of Mellberg in recent weeks, many of which have been negative and as a regular viewer of Premier League action, I have to say that I find this view point strange to say the least. Given that his preferred position is centre-back, he has performed admirably on the right-hand side of defence all season and will certainly prosper in either position in Turin. His crossing might not be up to much, but his performances in the defensive third of the pitch have been impressive and that is what he should be judged on.

So what will Juventus be getting when the man who resembles a Viking arrives on July 1? For starters, Ollie will give them a fantastic aerial presence in both defensive and offensive situations. And he’s no slouch on the ground either, with his sheer determination often worth an extra half a yard of pace. Which moves me on to his strongest suite – his attitude.

Mellberg is a player who would seemingly die for the cause. What you get from him, and you’ll have to excuse the cliché, is 110 per cent effort at all times. Sometimes his tenacity can go a little over the edge, but he is usually a hard but fair player. And which referee would argue against that, considering that Mellberg’s unshaven appearance makes him a candidate to take over from Gennaro Gattuso as Serie A’s Wolfman?

Any defence containing Giorgio Chiellini and Mellberg is likely to strike fear into opposition players and officials alike but, unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until the 2008-09 campaign to see how things pan out. Sporting director Alessio Secco is already unpopular enough as it is, but his failure to secure an immediate deal for the Swede has to go under the ever-increasing 'blunders’ column. With Villa sniffing around Alan Hutton and Pascal Chimbonda, surely a cheeky £1m could have sweetened the deal?

People will point to the fact that the Old Lady have added some depth to their backline by bringing in Guglielmo Stendardo from Lazio on loan. However, one of my Juventus supporting colleagues, who will remain unnamed, said of the 26-year-old’s arrival: “Stendardo? We might as well have kept Jean-Alain Boumsong!” With the competition for the Champions League places really starting to hot up, Secco had better hope that David Trezeguet and Co keep banging the goals in…

nice move by SUCKO...we needed this guy NOW !!

this is fucking great, we needed a CM, and got another DM instead, and missed out on getting a quality defender now, instead of later

if we are no farther ahead next season at this time (without CL football), blame SUCKO !!!

“He [Secco] needs to gain experience, but on top of this he could have also done better [with his signings]” said Montali

And why would Juve have to pay the bill, Send him to Siena, Empoli or smth to make some experience first, seriously cant we find a better man for this place?
He was a quick fix after the calciopoli incident, its time to move on!

I am sympathetic towards Ranieri, and his work so far....but I can't say the same about Secco.

I have this funny feeling that Secco is an Inter fan. Coz ever since he arrived it seems we keep goofing up in the transfer window.

I just cant explain lending out Criscito (he could also play as LB you know!) when we are having defensive problems without thinking or "planning" the proper replacement!

This guy should be the first to be sacked!

Stendardo deal to me seems like a get out of jail card coz all of a sudden, shit, I dont have a plan.

Sacchi Slams Sissoko & Stendardo Signings (Goal.com)

Former Milan coaching legend Arrigo Sacchi has blasted Juventus’ transfer dealings this season and has particularly criticised the January purchases of Momo Sissoko and Guglielmo Stendardo.

Bianconeri sports director Alessio Secco has come under a barrage of criticism recently for a string of disastrous signings, including those of Jean-Alain Boumsong, Sergio Almiron and Tiago Mendes.

"Months ago I was puzzled by the summer purchases of Juventus,” wrote Sacchi in his weekly space in the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Now the same is so in the winter [January transfer market].

“Of course managers have a budget beyond which they cannot exceed, but to spend around 40 million euros on players who are already mature and who have little chance of further growth does not strike me as a strategy that improves the team and gives the fans something to dream about.”

Juventus’ work in the January transfer window has also failed to satisfy the majority of critics.

Guglielmo Stendardo was brought in on loan despite an error-prone first-half to the season at Lazio, Aston Villa’s Olof Mellberg signed a pre-contract agreement for the summer, while Juve supporters were hugely opposed to the €13m signing of Momo Sissoko from Liverpool.

It is for the transfer of Sissoko that Sacchi is most critical.

“Sissoko is a moderately good player with a lot of strength, stamina and athletic ability, but he is unlikely to rise to the level of excellent. The same goes for Stendardo," concluded the European Cup-winning Coach from 1989 and 1990.

We became such a pathetic club, everyone is having a laugh on us, this is what is all about.. We had a fucking sissy boy that gives the paper to the 4th referee to make a substitution, now he is our transfer manager, what were you expecting people to comment about us?? Do you remember that crazy half bold guy at Lippi's time? he was a physio or something he runs like a crazy chicken everytime our players were down, that guy must be the president, I won't be surprised if he becomes one.
