Juventus pair acquitted on appeal
Wednesday 14 December, 2005
Juventus managing director Antonio Giraudo and club doctor Riccardo Agricola have been acquitted of doping-related charges in the appeals court today.

The two were accused of administering a club-sanctioned drugs programme in which Juve players were supplied with illegal performance-enhancing pharmaceuticals, including EPO, between 1994 and 1998 – a period during which the Bianconeri won three League championships and one Champions League title.

While Giraudo (pictured) was acquitted in court in November 2004, Agricola was found guilty under Italy's "sporting fraud" laws which were introduced to criminalise drugs cheats and sentenced to one year and 10 months in prison.

However, both the accused were found not guilty in Turin’s Appeals Court this afternoon after the judges decided that it could not apply law 401 of 1989 ("sporting fraud") in this instance of drug use at the club. As for the allegations of EPO use, the Court found there to be no case to answer.

Although Agricola was found guilty last year, he did not serve any time behind bars as Italian law prevents first-time offenders from having to serve sentences of under two years as a matter of course.

In the event of a guilty verdict Agricola would have been struck off but, after clearing his name, he can now return to medicine again.

"It’s a great day," said Giraudo. "Justice has been done."

Juventus team doctor acquitted in doping case
    Associated Press

ROME -- A team doctor for the soccer power Juventus was cleared of doping charges Wednesday in a case involving one of Italy's most successful and popular teams.

The appeals court in Turin acquitted physician Riccardo Agricola, his lawyer Emiliana Olivieri said. It also upheld the acquittal of chief executive Antonio Giraudo, she said.

Agricola had been convicted of administering banned substances, including the hormone EPO, to Juventus players from 1994-98, and was handed a suspended sentence of 22 months in November 2004. Giraudo had been acquitted.

On Wednesday, the court cleared Agricola of the charges of sporting fraud and administration of banned substances.

From 1994 to 1998, Juventus won three Italian league titles, one Champions League title and the Intercontinental Cup.

Vindication at last. I always maintained that, based upon the competent evidence received by the Trial Court, the Appeal process would have to overturn the conviction.

There are some statements of Giraudo, Agricola, Moggi and Bettega on the Italian version of Juventus.it. I hope the site will translate it, in the meanwhile read these words by Giraudo:

“Ringrazio gli avvocati che ci hanno seguito in questi anni, durante i quali siamo stati offesi e infangati per un teorema giudiziario che i giudici hanno distrutto in termini di merito e di diritto. Il fango che ci è stato buttato addosso è quanto di peggio si possa fare a chi fa il nostro mestiere, abbiamo avuto gravi danni di immagine e penso a chi ce li ripagherà. Non lasceremo nulla di intentato con chi si è comportato scorrettamente nei confronti della Juventus.”.

".... We have had many damages and I'm thinking about who will repay them. We won't leave anything untried against those that have behaved unfairly to Juventus"

    (insert evil laugh here)

It seems that Giraudo said: "I suggest Zeman to read carefully the sentence. If he doesn't understand it, we'll provide him our lawyers. It's a bit long, but it seems to me that he has a lot of spare time."

    :rofl2:
