Rabiot is still a good midfielder who I feel Motta will get the best out of. If he asks for a smallish pay increase, it will be a lot cheaper than getting someone else. Upside of him gone means we can get someone like K Thuram or Fofana who are younger and have upside potential and on lower wages. Rabiot still starts for France remember which is arguably the strongest team on paper in Europe. I think Rabiot could be better utilized in a double pivot in a 4231 just like he did for France in the last game.
To some extent, our midfield has been poor for a while but I also think Allegri's tactics were not conducive to bringing the best out of them. Locatelli is a case in point. I would be more than happy to see Locatelli go but he went from being a half decent box to box midfielder to a truly mediocre regista which is obviously not his strength.
As I said, overall, I am ambivalent so long as Giuntoli holds firm and sais - "This is the contract I have prepared - take it or leave it".

For the bigger picture, with resetting the salary expectations at the club, it’s probably wise to offload him and Tek.
There’s a big overhaul likely taking place this summer so it may be easier to accept the slight downgrade in the replacement.
Defensive midfielders (Rabbit), young players and centre backs (De Ligt) and Goalkeepers (Tek) should never be the highest paid players at a club. It’s all part of the Paratici fuck up recovery process.
