wow. i am going to shoot myself. it got to the point where i couldnt even open the start menu, i had no choice. i reformated

along with the 110 gb of not-backed-up-media, i lost everything. i figured, well that god i still have my music, when i reinstalled windows i installed itunes, and it whiped my ipod clean.

i now have nothing. not one file. not one song. not one video. not to mention, all those songs were downloaded, i dont own any cds. iam fucked.

and i would just like to clarify to whoever makes these fucking viruses that i honestly hope you get your fucking head sawed off while your alive. you deserve it.

Loosing everything sucks so much that I make monthly back-ups of all my important stuff nowadays.

Basically, it's a MS OS patch that will protect you from the WMF exploit going on now.

If you don't add it yourself, undoubtedly your Windows Update on your machine will install it automatically overnight.

I had the program spybot that you were talking about already- tried that first, but it only came up with 3 spyware infections. Got rid of those but the computer still said it was being remotely controlled by someone elsewhere and that the pc was seriously infected. Downloading spyaxe sorted it all out. I don't really consider it evil tbh

But they sold it to you by infecting your machine.

This is like saying a company that sells you a cure for your disease is a good company... and ignoring the fact that the company is dumping stuff in your drinking water to give you the disease in the first place.

Seb, its like moving into a new apartment. Fresh. Crisp. Clean.

Nows your chance to fortify your defences beforehand. Milkhail opened a thread over in the tech forum(I think).

It has all the programs you will ever need to keep your computer safe.

    Here's my list:

    Firewall: Zone Alarm Standard
    Antivirus: AVG Free Edition
Anti Spyware: Ad-Aware; Spybot search and destroy (registry monitor)
    Other: Ewido security suite.

I adjusted the settings a bit and update regularly. Not a single major problem.

    Good choices, Josh.

I haven't tried AVG Free Edition ... but I've been more of a beta user of ClamWinAV. They all use the same core virus definitions out there anyway, but the clamscan AV engine has occasionally missed signatures from what I've heard. But still, hey -- I was using Linux back in '96 and ImageMagick back in '97 and now look at them... sometimes it works to support freeware early on.

Very good list. I use avast for anti-virus which is free and works excellently as well. Thsoe with spyware problems, get Ad-Aware from this site: www.lavasoft.com. Scan your computer at least once a month, both with Spybot search and destroy and Ad-Aware and together with Zone Alarm, you won't have anything unwanted on your computer.

swag: I dont dabble in clamscannery, being something of a computer/internet non-geek, but avg has worked very well for me- within 2 seconds after a completed download it pops up with a virus-notice if the file is infected. viva la freeware.

sadomim: Im gonna look into avast. is it possible/feasible to use both avast and avg at the same time?
