    i foudn i cant reformat, i dont have the restore cd that came with the comp or a windows xp cd.

    Be careful... all my wife's relatives are Portuguese. And if the size of their belt buckles are any indication, no one should be putting their tongue down there.

    I had the exact same problem: last week's WMF exploit where just an image, disguised as a jpeg, could have wmf headers and infect the hell out of your machine. It's a pretty nasty one. The good news for people not affected is that it can be prevented by the latest updates for virus blocking software, etc. The bad news is for the rest of us -- where I VPNed into work last Friday and got the virus updates after it was too late.

    I basically never get viruses, so you can imagine my surprise. It's just a wmf disguised as an image, for crying out loud. Just evil.

    This bugger is seriously resilient. That's the bad news. The good news is that, after trying a lot of things yesterday, I managed to get rid of it on my own.

    Microsoft knows about the problem and says they have no fix for it ... and hope to be out with one Monday. So don't reformat your hard drive yet. Worst comes to worst, you might get some salvation from the patch they will distribute. Of course, next Monday can turn into next month with those guys...

    So chill out and hang tight. I'll PM you what I did to get rid of it (even if MS says there's no fix yet)... it took a but of running Anti-SpyWare software in Safe Mode and running a special script.

    But now... it's dinner time!

    ZoneAlarm is pretty cool, IMO. It does a lot to notify you and help prevent both incoming and outgoing traffic that you don't want from your machine. But I wouldn't be so sure if the latest ZoneAlarm updates would cover something like this. Most anti-virus software, yes (and I'm a ClamWin guy when using Windows, btw). But ZoneAlarm? Not so sure.

    As much as I hate to endorse a Microsoft product (anything good out of them in the past 10 years has either been a rip-off or purchase of a competitor anyway), their Anti-Spyware beta is at least trying to do the right thing... with an option for real-time monitoring.

    If this doesn't make you swear off Windows and use Linux exclusively, there's not much else that will. ;)

    spyaxe ain't the virus - its the default recommended windows anti-apyware software. Thats why you're being constantly directed to it.

    When I said flush the pc I did a full system check with spyaxe, isolated and quarantined any spyware that it found. Its dead eay but you have to buy or download spyaxe first

    SpyAxe technically isn't the problem. The problem is all the junk that installs nagware on your machine in an attempt to strong-arm infected users to purchase SpyAxe to get rid of the nuisance.

    SpyAxe is only the "default recommended windows anti-spyware" for those who have been afforded no choice after being infected. And the infection makes it look like Windows Update is recommending the SpyAxe download... talk about evil.

    You had better believe that Windows' default recommended anti-spyware program is their own, not some product called "SpyAxe" written by some jamokes who used the distribution of a trojan horse as their marketing strategy.

    Use any other anti-spyware program, like the Windows AntiSpyware beta or Spybot Search & Destroy, and SpyAxe comes up in their searches as spyware and attempts to remove it. How's that for a guilty verdict?

    But I gotta say, buying SpyAxe, you just rewarded a company for using trojan horses to market their products. :frown: You're just encouraging this kind of malevolent behavior -- by proving that tricking computer users through viruses into buying software is a viable business, and it is a practice that users financially reward.
