I love this story. Posted it on LinkedIn as a 2020 meme format throwback...

And here's the thing... that's an old fraud

Back in 2014 I was evaluating and working with a few tech companies in the "visual search" space. Then the new idea that you point your mobile phone camera at a pair of shoes or a tree and it tells you "Nike LeBron 12" or "American sycamore".

I knew one entrepreneur behind an investor funded app that essentially uploaded the submitted image to the cloud. Then a mechanical turk chaiwalla on break in a giant warehouse outside Bangalore would get assigned the image and write back "adidas ZX Flux".

Image recognition deep learning my butt.

So I got a late ask to help judge a competitive AI startup accelerator contest, hosted between both Oxford and Cambridge, called the Oxbridge AI X Challenge.
https://enspire.ox.ac.uk/event/60k-oxbridge-ai-challenge-2024

I'm reviewing and scoring 25 startup proposals this week in a role I call, as I jokingly tell my wife, "Crusher of Dreams".

There are a number of weak-assed proposals that are missing large chunks of the basics, like how they expect to monetize the thing or what their Go To Market strategy should be as a startup.

But then I get gems like the one I'm reviewing right now, that's looking at compression techniques for the ever-growing token sizes going in and out of LLM queries and the like.

I'm doubled over laughing because it's basically Pied Piper for LLMs.

Here's the kicker: it's actually a decent idea.

I would expect simple calculations to work immediately. But beyond that these things constantly just make things up for whatever reason. My team lead sent me this. He sent the first image, then copied and pasted a list and asked it to compare them, I didn't include that in the screenshots.

"As I mentioned," where did you mention anything??
Yup. Same prompt, same dataset; never the same output.

I tried using it to design a elaborate Powerpoint slide that I needed ASAP. The results

Google, amazon, facebook all have the money to keep advancing AI and openAI will get whatever money they needed too from investors.

Im just gonna pick software engineering cause thats the subject i understand the most, i believe we are not faraway from disrupting it. Devs are now already using assistant in their daily work, then checkout Devin from cognition labs - an AI coder, pretty mind blowing and it will only get better from here.

Heres the progression i foresee:
- Devs using AI to be more productive (now is already starting to become a norm, every devs in my company using github autopilot)
- Something like Devin allows innovative companies to start shifting their Dev's job to be more of architect and code reviewer.. this itself will create more data to train and improve improve the model. Not gonna lie, as CTO im excited to start incorporating something like this in my company

From the toolings perspectives, more and more toolings and platforms are going to be built in adjacent to AI advancements that will make solving problems even more trivial for AI to solve.

I see in less 5y companies dont need as many devs anymore compared to today and in less than 10y companies will only need software architects to build software solutions.

Maybe even sooner

Honestly right now is the gold rush

Just like dotcom gold rush in late 90s
Just like facebook apps gold rush in mid 2000s
Just like ios/android gold rush in late 2000s
Just like dApps gold rush (ICOs) not so long ago

You can make silly wrapper solution to solve niche problems using chatgpt or open source LLMs

I know some AI gf startup last year are making 100k/month.. and honestly its not hard to make at all

Im currently thinking of building something as side project too.

I had dApp side project on ethereum last 2021 dApps / nft / defi gold rush making 500k usd in half a year (5 cofounders, we split evenly)
ChatGPT works for me greatly. I've been using it for 3 months, building a resume with different formats that meet the job specifications and requirements, ChatGPT provides great features and capabilities for learning language. But I need a platform with the same function which gives me options and tips for learning coding. As you know not all AI tools and platforms are free, they require payment for their advanced processes. Can you recommend a platform to learn coding or is ChatGPT enough?

ChatGPT recently released canvas feature (https://openai.com/index/introducing-canvas/), i think you can go far with just chatgpt but i think you might benefit having something more integrated with the development tool like cursor.com

It also depends on your experience/skill level at coding cause these tools might overwhelm you

But if you just search in youtube cursor ai youll see a lot of tutorials/walkthroughs/demos of people with no coding skill or beginner level up until advanced programmers building stuff using cursor

I can say this more easily living in-between the two countries, but the world needs China technology. If for nothing else than to put these arrogant, digital colonialist, bloated Murican Big Tech CEOs back in their place.
