Juve need to do quite a lot, so I don't see the harm in getting an older guy like Pirlo to be a safe pair of hands for a season or two, before letting him become a backup. That is only okay, though, if Juve do make proper longer-term signings in other positions.

I'm assuming things will change a bit next season. There wouldn't be much point in putting Pirlo in the current Juve team, because there wouldn't be anyone for him to pass to and he'd be a defensive liability.

I don't think Pirlo has deteriorated over the last couple of years as some do. Pirlo is a passer, so he needs people to pass to. In the past, he had great movement from guys like Cafu and Shevchenko for Milan and Zambrotta and Grosso for Italy. Who now moves off the ball as well as those...

How exactly is it not a gamble to sign an ageing player who has been injured a lot in the last year? I wouldn't say it's a bad move, though.

Pirlo plays the ball quickly when there is good movement. He only holds the ball when other options aren't available.

In what way does his game fit catenaccio?
