    Tell him to save it as a rich text document (rtf). At least if you want to edit it, otherwise html is fine too.

    Like Don said, not all sites work perfectly with Mozilla cause the webmasters can't be bothered to test with anything but IE. Datasport.it is one such sorry example. But it's rarely a problem. As regards other files, you ask people to give them to you in a format you can open them.
