That is not canon anymore unfortunately . Still I think it's a good idea and it's better they went with it this way . It's a world we know in a time period we know so it would be easy to sell it to the public . If the fanbase is reignited with SW VII and Rouge One than they can start to explore...

There is a whole Extended Universe of books that covers what happens after episode VI . They are not canon after the disney aqcuisition , but they have done a great job in continuing the story . The VI episode is a great set up of what's to come , the galaxy needs to be rebuilt the jedi order...
