4-2-3-1 isn't even an offensive formation. It can be even more defensive than 4-4-2. It's just a perfect formation for a team that has a player like Diego but also bad fullbacks that can't provide the width. There's no way Candreva could be worse on the left in 4-2-3-1 than Marchisio on the left...

I just can't understand why Zacc wants to try every formation except the 4-2-3-1. He has probably recognized the fact that we need more width than our bad fullbacks can provide. Still i'm not sure that benching Diego and playing Marchisio on the left wing is a better solution than 4-2-3-1.
