The #88 connection to Heil Hitler was not something the Nazis themselves came up with. It was created by wanna-be's long after the fiery death of the Third Reich. A lot of Neo Nazis also fly American flags here in the US, but that doesn't make the American flag a Nazi symbol all of a sudden.

The connection is likely lost on a lot of Americans, and Europeans too for that matter. And if told, most players who wear #88 would probably say "Who gives a shit?"

88 is used by neo-Nazi's. Not sure if they use any other numbers, though. There is a significance to it, but just because someone prefers 88 doesn't mean it's because they are saluting Adolf Hitler.
