There's no question he was instructing Caballero to play the ball. And he absolutely cannot do that. Just put 10 players behind Messi. 10 possession players and compensate their softness with numbers.

Play all the CMs who can keep the ball, because Messi needs teammates who can keep the ball. He's not Ronaldo who can jump over 2 CBs and smash headers.

Play Pastore, Banega, Lo Celso, Paredes. All flair and fancy blah blah, but play a lot of them so you have numbers to still win the ball. In possession, you can play and then let Messi find space.

Instead he puts all butchers and the ball is whizzing like ping pong. And how do you expect Messi to influence the match?
If he is the goat as some claim he shouldn’t have to have everything built perfectly for him like that.

Prime Liverpool Suarez would have been able to carry this Argentina to victory

I think people overemphasize the importance of player selection. It's really only one small part of coaching. Argentina didn't fail because they picked the wrong players, they failed because they weren't a team.
how can you honestly think that after watching last 2 games? none of the "coach favorites" that supposedly play because they make the team tick with their work, played even close to decent. they have serious issues in defense and midfield, and it has all to do with who they played/didnt play

Player selection matters. I've seen Fazio block that same Modric shot over and over in Serie A. Should be the first defender on the sheet and he's not even in the lineup. Otamendi is hopeless and has failed over and over.

My boss was saying that Sampaoli looks like a brick layer or construction worker from south Philly and started making an Italian accent mockingly  he’s so right. How the fuck did this guy become a coach?

its a crime to bench the guy that just played a CL semifinal for some Ajax nobody, and even bigger crime to leave Garay at home for same dude.

“When people talk about stars, they told me – and I do not want to enter into controversy – they told me: ‘Ramos is a star,’” Maradona, considered by many to be the best player of all time, said.

“No, Godín is a star that defends you, that rules, that creates you a goal, who is a champion, that does not miss a game.”:heart:

Ramos was asked about Maradona’s remarks following Spain’s narrow 1-0 World Cup victory over Iran in Kazan on Wednesday night and made a comparison of his own in return.

“In Argentina they know that Maradona is light years away from the best Argentine player in history which, for me, is Lionel Messi,” he said.

Sampaoli is a coward. He didn't want neither Dybala and Higuain but took them to avoid the backlash. Now he can bench them for the whole World Cup

Maradona is right tho Godin is better than Ramos

Probably better than Chiello too tbh

I’m not sure, I think it might just go down to coaching style. Chile was good at staying disciplined and defending hard while Argentina needs more stimuli so to speak. He seems like a good motivator but perhaps not a good tactician.

It doesn't only apply to this case. I think overall people seem to do that. It over simplifies football. There's many things that matter more. Yet your overall football fan always thinks change this or that player and everything is fixed.

Argentina have more than enough of individual talent to make it through this group, yet it seems Iceland stand a better chance of making it at the moment. Why do you think that is? Because they picked the right players?

When I watch this Argentina I see a deeply dysfunctional team. They don't defend to together, they don't attack together. You can hardly expect good results when such simple things aren't there.

He only won the first one..... 2015
oh, makes sense then. only won the one when they were hosts, and it took him a lot of luck in PKs to do it

Of course it matters, but isn't nearly as influential as people like to make it seem.

Sampaoli

What a fraud. Just look at the squad of players he’s selected. Bang average and then leaves guys like Higuain and Dybala on the bench most of the time. And then Messi, a flat track bully at international level. His head drops, and he doesn’t look anywhere near as good as he does for Barca. And then look at Ronaldo for Portugal, single handedly dragging them through this tournament on his back.

Hope Iceland finish the job against Nigeria and Croatia next round and Argentina go home in disgrace.
