Marchisio is the perfect substite. If he is the player you rotate that gives you guarantees your midfield isn't anything below WC.
But where are we planning to get :money: from?
Surely, the Bayern model is all fine and dandy, but we have to make smart sales at some point as I do feel that in every team there are players having their weight pulled by the rest.
Remember when PSG were willing to splash 15+ on Licht? Well imagine we've milked them a fair 20 on that then... Could we pull even a close figure ever?
And I am not saying selling Licht would have been good or bad at that point - its debatable - but there must be a point where a sale is a smart one.

There is a point where a sale is a smart one, but when you're a an ambitious club and you're talking about a player who is or clearly has the potential to be one of the very best in their position in modern football(Pogba and Vidal), that point skyrockets. We showed that we have no reluctance to sell players who were disposable when the right offer comes in by selling Giach and Matri(I know Giach wanted to leave due to the WC, but that's not the point) in the summer.
In Licht's specific situation, if Isla had panned out as the club was hoping he would, we could have probably cashed in, but we lacked the depth at RWB to really consider selling him at a reasonable price, and finding a replacement that wouldn't be a downgrade while still making a profit would've been very difficult.

@Ocelot, @VuvuzelaBzz
Giach and especially Matri were good sales. But both were mostly luck, rather than a part of a master plan. Giach, at least in my eyes, looks more like the player we should build up just so we can cash in on, but when you look at the details -the deal ain't impressive at all.
Marchisio for 35M to Monaco? Quag for 10-15m a season ago? Giovinco....
offcourse but we had mediocre youngsters. Cant expect to get much for them
Now, with the Paratici generation, we actually have excellent prospects. Loan em out to serie a teams. if one has a cracker season then come the interesting part.
1 good sale, pays for years of investing in youngsters
