In Italy, there is only one true passion, one true activity that the entire nation supports and comes together around. This is soccer. Known to the rest of the world, as football, futbol, and soccer, there are many reasons why this sport is the most popular in the world. Within Italy, it is followed week after week, day after day amongst thousands of people. The Italian press dedicates many hours to any news within clubs, talk amongst players, and most importantly, post match results. Its hard to fully discuss just how much of a pastime this sport really is, to explain how deep it lies within Italian culture, but I will try to do my best. I will briefly go into the fan aspect, how many fans worship each team like a religion, and the players like Gods. The rivalries that take place year after year and the legendary players that make Italian soccer what it is today.
Within the country of Italy, fans are essentially what makes the sport so great. Unlike other sports, fans of calico are some of the most intense and passionate that you will ever see. Fans stand behind their teams through the good and the bad, and are elated to see their team do well. Many fans are born into a team, based on the region or city they live in. For example, in Italy’s current Serie A division, there are twenty teams. Each team represents a city, and also a region in Italy. The list is as follows…
So for someone born into say Turin, or the region of Piedmonte, they might support Juventus, while someone in say Rome, may support Lazio or Roma. Then there are also the fans that support a team based on how successful it is, the players it includes, and its overall history.
This leads us to the rivalries that take place between these so called fans, and the teams they worship. In soccer, these are called derbies, and are essentially big games played between two teams from within the same city or region. For example, the Roma – Lazio derby is one of the oldest to date. Other big rivalries are the Inter Milan – AC Milan derby, and Messina – Palermo, Juventus – Torino, etc. As a fan, you can only stand behind one team in your area, and that’s where the beauty of this comes into play. Fans become heated over their team, and sadly incidents occur. For example, during the Roma – Lazio derby last year, a fan ran onto the pitch and told Francesco Totti that the police had run over a child in front of the stadium. The players all stopped playing, which upset the fans, and they began to riot throughout the stadium because of this halt in their game. They tore up seats in the stadium, lit parts of it on fire, and overturned police vehicles out front. All because their beautiful game was suspended. (video/clips/pics) (oh mio dio). In more recent news, we can look at the fans of Inter Milan, in their Champions League game against AC Milan, on (date) where they rained many flares down on the field, and even struck Ac Milan’s goalkeeper Dida in the shoulder. The reason for this being that they were about to be eliminated from the competition, since the referee did not allow them a legal and fair goal. This video shows just how bad fans can be for the sport, but also just how passionate, and how much they can get behind their own team, to prevent them from bad or unfair results. (video from Cl)
if you can just take a few lines, even a paragraph, id appreciate it. thanks!
Any help is appreciated.
