Saw this story in today's paper...
She had been married for over seven years to a husband she also dated for about three years before the wedding. She described her husband as a very loving, caring, and dutiful man. Her marriage to him would have been perfect but for one little thing. She had not conceived a child for her husband in the almost 11 years they have been together. She disclosed that they did not consider their childless state a problem for the first few years because they were young, happy and loved the freedom that it provided them. But after four years of marriage, she began having trouble with their parents. Her mother on one hand, urging her to do something about her childless status before her husband starts looking elsewhere, and her mother-in-law insinuating that she must be responsible for their condition.
So, to the doctors she went. Initially, it was discovered that she had hormonal problems and this was promptly treated. But two years after, the situation remained the same. She was forced to renew her effort. In the face of all these, her husband remained fervent, supporting and consoling her. He was of the view that children were gifts from God and He will surely give them one in good time. In her quest for solution, however, she was introduced to an elderly doctor who insisted that he would only treat her along with her husband. Here, the problem began. The husband did not only refuse to go to the hospital, he even tried to stop his wife. A situation that led to insinuations from several quarters. All evidences thus pointed to the man as probably being the problem.
Trouble came knocking when she travelled to Lagos for a cousin’s wedding. She met a charming middle aged man with whom she became good friends and stayed in touch after the wedding. On his invitation, she visited Lagos a few weeks later and "the deed was done." She said she would have swept the incident under the carpet and moved on with her life and her husband. But a few weeks later, she was confirmed seven weeks pregnant, and dead sure that it belonged to the married man with four children whom she had a fling with. Confused, she called her mother who insisted she must return to Lagos and do nothing with the pregnancy. So, she made up some story for her husband and escaped from her matrimonial home. She has since been hiding at a cousin’s place.
Our lady’s problems are multi-faceted.
First is what to do with the pregnancy. Should she keep it and damn the consequence? She is very reluctant to leave her husband, a man she says has done her no wrong. At the same time, she is not sure that passing the child off as his will not boomerang later. As for the owner of the pregnancy, she is not sure he can support her and the baby along with his original family. Also, she does not want to be the cause of another woman’s broken home. Her mother is however insisting that she must have the baby with or without the consent of the two men involved, arguing that had her husband been in her shoes, he would not have thought twice before bringing the woman home.
