TED is fake intellectualism the way that Ian is a fake Juve fan. 
It's run by a bunch of people who want to have their egos stroked to think they're smart by getting a bunch of PhDs to dance for them on a stage. In reality, their attention spans for any meaningful knowledge and discussion are cut off at just the point where you can go beyond intellectual vanity.
