Maybe he felt he'd seen how far he could go... he won everything there is to win, barring of course international silverware,( but then it wasnt his fault he was born in N.I)... he had all the fame and adulation, international recognition for his talent etc etc... screwed several Miss World winners... What more could he want...
Sounds likely.

But then; that is why my list of greatest players is undoubtedly different than his would've been. Because I see things from a completely different point of view. After all; the knowledge of the audience about a player cannot possibly compared to the knowledge a player has of himself. However, the audience is still allowed to form their own opinions based on their own knowledge and sentiments.

Erik, I don't think that's a fair opinion because simply anyone can show the will to win. That doesn't make someone great. It's nice that someone like me has got a lot of determination, but I, for one, won't respect determination. I will respect pure talent. That's what makes someone like Best special. Oh and Davids is a false analogy, because he's talented as hell.

But what makes a great player, to me, is a combination of factors along the lines of winning mentality, never-ending thirst for glory, fighting spirit and more. Talent, to me, is merely a basic requirement that is needed like breathing is necessary for living (OK that's downgrading it a bit but I'm sure you understand).
...
I dont really see that in georges case, he had all those qualities and more... He jus quit early, thats all... (i was encompassing all those things within my use of talent when it comes to george)

George was one of the most passionate players ive ever seen... But that thirst slows in all of us in whatever field we are in over time...

Maybe george jus got out when the passion was starting to wane... He did give us 11 years of brilliance after all... (more than most)

i really wish i was here for this constructive argument.

Shadowfax the only reason i chose Cryuff over Best was that he did not push himself to what he could of been. He was a genious with the ball. But thats not the only thing that makes a footballer its also how u compose yourself on and off the pitch...

other than that all has been mentioned in the post ...

Footballer = Someone who plays football.

That's all there is to a football player I'm afraid. It's only about what you're worth on the pitch.

true...but also how u compose yourself in public take a look at Pele,Platini, F.Beckenbaur they all are great role models and will continue to take thier football greatness to another level. As for the other hand an ex footballer who becomes a doper or alcoholic will not be as respected not for his football skills but for his lifestyle....hard to explain specially with maradonas case...

Look. How you compose yourself in public might determine what kind of person you are, but it has got nothing to do with your abilities as a football player. It might however determine whether you're a legend or not, because in order to be a legend you need a factor you don't control: the public.

actually you can control it if you can be political about it.....for instance do what u like(drink ,dope , screw mad bitches) but no one gots to now....the public will only lose respect for those who get caught for it or do it without a care.

keeping the public happy is tricky business my friend....mabey G.best needed a great agent...who knows....

That's nice and all, but that doesn't diminish Best's capabilities as a football player, which was my point.
