There has been another night of violence and protests in Sydney.

There were violent clashes and vandalism in the beach-side suburbs of Cronulla and Brighton-Le-Sands.

A large group of men police described as of Middle Eastern appearance gathered in Cronulla where cars and other property were smashed.

Police called in all available riot equipment and extra officers saying car loads of people arrived in the area with many taking part in attacks on property.

At Brighton, a smaller crowd threw bricks and other objects at police cars and passing motorists.

Police helicopter patrols were taking place over the scene of both locations.

Earlier tonight there was a major police presence at Lakemba Mosque in Sydney's south-west, where a big crowd had gathered.

Police also confiscated iron bars and other weapons from a park and the roofs of nearby houses at Maroubra.

The weapons are believed to have been stored there by local residents.

Elsewhere in Sydney's south and west, police were responding to calls to monitor groups of cars travelling through Rockdale, a large gathering of people on the street at Punchbowl and another group said to be armed with baseball bats at Peakhurst.

The latest incidents follow a day of violent confrontations at several beach-side suburbs.
