A new rule(well, I guess not a rule exactly) in the EPL says that players are not to kick the ball out of play if a player goes down injured. It is now completely up to the referee whether the play is to be stopped or not. The rule goes into effect right from the start of the season.

They need to do this in Serie A as well. It's probably the most ridiculous in Italy, where the players point to the line and yell at the opposition if the ball isn't played out right away.

The escalating convention of players kicking the ball out when another player goes down injured will be stopped in the Premiership this season.

Following three meetings with the elite managers, referees will assume total responsibility for when a game is halted. From Saturday, players will be instructed to play on, even if an opponent is injured, unless the referee whistles.

What once appeared a simple act of good sportsmanship - kicking the ball into touch to allow a fellow pro to recover - has become complicated by the rise in footballers simulating injuries.

The trend was particularly noticeable during the World Cup, while Arsenal's Arsene Wenger and Tottenham's Martin Jol had a furious disagreement over the issue last season.

Concerned that the convention for kicking the ball out is actually heightening tensions, as well as disrupting the game's flow, the Premier League have decided to act.
