Viareggio: Juventus through after penalties

Juventus are through to the quarter-finals of the Viareggio Cup after beating Lazio following a penalty shoot-out. The match was a very balanced one with the bianconeri who went ahead twice.

Juventus opened the score 3 minutes into the match thanks to Daud after Immobile managed to keep the ball in play and cross over to his team-mate. The Somali player seems to be in a moment of particular grace in this tournament with the goal against Lazio being his 4th in as many matches. Lazio, however are a good team and this showed in their reaction to the goal by creating a number of good initiatives. It was however the bianconeri who went close to increasing the score margin on a couple of occasions with Esposito and Immobile. On the 40th minute, though, Lazio scored the equaliser from the eleven meters thanks to Tuia after the referee awarded a rather generous penalty for a foul in the area by Ariaudo.

The second half saw both teams fighting hard to make it to the quarter-finals. On the 63rd minute Maddaloni’s team went ahead once again this time thanks to De Paola who scored after a defective clearance by the Lazio defence. One minute later the bianconeri could have sealed Lazio’s fate when a shot by Immobile went inches wide with the Lazio goalkeeper beaten. On the 35th minute Lazio equalised a second time with Cinelli who shot the ball into the net after a re-bound off the horizontal post. One minute later Immobile headed the ball inches high over the bar for what could have been the third goal for Juventus and the lead once again. Juventus had another couple of good occasions but the match went to penalties as the result at the end of the 90 minutes was 2-2.

Near perfect equilibrium even during the penalty shoot-out which was only decided after 7 penalties were shot for each team with Pinsoglio the hero of the day saving two. The final result was that of 8-7 for the bianconeri.

Maddaloni’s team will know who they are to face in the quarter-finals after the draws which will be held tonight at 19:00hrs.

Below is the penalty sequence:

Castiglia : saved
Tuia : goal
Ekdal : goal
Koshak : goal
Immobile : goal
Cavalieri : saved
Marrone : goal
Luciani : goal
Yago : goal
Shamanna : goal
Giovinco : saved
Di Mario : saved
D’Elia : goal
Kavanda : out

This isn't my match report, but one I found...It seems that Daud is continuing to make a name for himself, and now that Iago is back in the starting XI he is orchestrating most of the attacking play...

    Juve 3-2 Siena

Juventus are through to the semi-finals of the Viareggio Cup after beating Siena. The match saw the bianconeri constantly taking the initiative.

With Juventus attacking right from the start it was however Siena that opened the score 20 minutes into the match thanks to Larrondo. Juventus, continued to attack and impose their game collecting a large number of corners. The Juventus attack sees its inspiration in young Spaniard Yago who with a number of good runs and a series of dribbles wreaked havoc on the right flank. After a series of Juventus opportunities, the bianconeri equalised two minutes before the break thanks to the youngster who is making himself the prime candidate for the Golden Boy award, that is Ayub Daud.

The second half saw the bianconeri with a fiery start, immediately imposing their play on the match. Three minutes into the half it was once again the Somali talent who put Juventus ahead, scoring his 6th goal in five matches of the tournament. Two minutes later Juventus scored a third, this time thanks to Marrone who headed the ball beyond the Siena goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Juventus continued to attack and had a number of good chances to add to score line with opportunities for Immobile and Yago amongst others. Siena tried to fight back and at the end made the score 3-2 thanks to Giannetti with the bianconeri already in the semi-finals.

Maddaloni’s team will now meet Torino in the semi-finals after the “cousins” beat Reggina following a penalty shoot-out.

So now we face Torino in the semi-final, which I expect us to win, which will set us up nicely to maul Inter...

In the highlights I saw, he only scored one goal which I would call quality, the rest were more down to poor goalkeeping or a poachers instinct. He didn't look good enough to challenge any of the forward players presently occupying that area of the first team. I am more hopeful of Iago and Ekdal, and also the left sided D'elia. Our first team needs more creativity and better crossing, which those three players seem able to provide, albeit in bright flashes.

To add to the earlier post...I m however happy to read that we have tied him down until 2013. If he has any potential, lets hope he gets given a chance pre-season to shine with the first team.
