No offense, Rab, but why is it that from time to time we a freak of nature who is from Romania? Is it the food?
Well, it's easy actually.
There were two main ways from where tribes could move from Asia to Europe. One is the Bosphorus, but that's where Istanbul is and it was well protected by Bizantine for thousand years (exactly during the time when hundreds of Asian tribes moved to Europe in the 5th and 6th century).
The other is from the Russian steppe into Romania. River Danube is the natural border today, just as it was back then. It wasn't as well protected as the Bosphorus, but it was still more or less protected and not everyone could pass it. So all those hundreds of tribes (usually nomadic tribes, at the lowest cultural level you can imagine) settled on the northern side of Danube, while looking for new territories.
I don't need to tell you that the territory i'm talking about is today's Romania.
And when you have such a coctail of Mongols, Huns, Bulgars, Slavs, little bit Romans, Gepids, Scirii, Rugians, Sarmatians, Kutrigurs, Utigurs and hundreds of more Asian barbaric tribes, it's not a coincidence that a freak will pop up from time to time.
