I don't think this match is going to be as easy as some might believe .. playing in Belgrade is never easy .. S&M still have a chance to qualify if other results go their way so they are definetly going to give it their best without any 'huge' pressures at the same time .. they also have the home advantage and the whole stadium will be with them ..

S&M play nice free-flowing football but without Stankovic they are obviously going to be weakened (Juve without Nedved?) .. However, we need to be aware of one dangerous player: Savo Milosevic .. He openly said that his stay in Italy (Parma) was like living hell and threw some punches on the style of play in Italy so he will be trying to do the talking on the pitch this time ..

Anyway, Italy's players just need to be patient and hopefully the goals will come by eventually .. Vieri needs to be more clinical, whereas Del Piero should keep-up his impressive form and Perrota-Zanetti should also repeat their great performance in San Siro tomorrow .. Buffon backed up by Nesta and Canna should be careful and hopefully we will end up winners and book our tickets to Portugal ..

Btw, Trap won the battle against millions of football followers by insisting to play 4-4-2 with Del Piero on the left instead of the much wanted 4-3-1-2 .. Good Job Trap !!

Giovanni Trapattoni has confirmed one change to the Italy side that beat Wales as they prepare for a showdown in Belgrade.


The Coach has been forced to leave out Cristiano Zanetti following a foot and ankle problem that flared up during training.


The Inter midfielder will sit on the sidelines and Juventus star Alessio Tacchinardi is drafted in to partner Simone Perrotta.


Tacchinardi is a more creative midfielder than Zanetti, so Trap’s line-up remains attack-minded for Wednesday’s clash with Serbia & Montenegro.


Despite his fine substitute showing at the San Siro, Lazio wing-back Massimo Oddo is left on the bench once again.


Roma’s Christian Panucci is given the nod to start at right-back in a 4-4-2 system.


“This qualification is nowhere near sewn up,” warned Trap. “The win over Wales was a giant step forward, but it is far from over.”


“We absolutely need a victory in Belgrade and must get the points at all costs. Hopefully we’ll find more space to manoeuvre than we did against Wales.”

Euro 2004 Qualifier Preview: Serbia & Montenegro v Italy

09/09/2003. BACKGROUND

Saturday's spectacular San Siro thrashing of Wales has put Italy back in the driving seat in group 9, but many believe this clash against Serbia & Montenegro represents a major stumbling block.

For coach Giovanni Trapattoni is all too aware at what a contrast in styles his men are facing: "They are a less physical team than the Welsh but they play more and play better with the ball."

Indeed, there will surely be long periods of the game where the Azzurri will have to be patient and bide their time while the hosts weave their pretty patterns.

Serbia & Monenegro are by no means out of contention for a play off spot. They sit in fourth place in the group, four points behind Wales and are in need of favours, but qualification is still possible. Such a technically adept side would surely shine in Portugal next summer, but those back-to-back defeats against Finland and Azerbaijan may cost them dear when it comes to achieving their ultimate goal.

One wonders just how the Azzurri will react to that intense 4-0 win over Wales on Saturday. For it was by no means as comfortable as the score-line suggests. Wales had a couple of splendid first-half chances and managed to get in level at half-time. But then the floodgates opened. A hat-trick from Pippo Inzaghi and a penalty from the impressive Alex Del Piero had the San Siro hoards in raptures, and coach Trapattoni saying I told you so.

The former Juventus boss is no longer under the intense pressure he was a year ago, and this is reflected in his side's more relaxed, free-flowing style of play.

The Azzurri aren't out of the woods yet, and any dropped points here could prove fatal with Wales' two remaining games both at home. But there is an air of confidence around Italy now, and they don't look like faltering as they enter the final straight.

Trap did an excellent job against Wales, but to see Panucci perform as he did and Oddo perform as he did, leaving out the latter is nearly a crime. It's good to see that Tacchinardi is back in the starting line-up after missing the Wales match due to injury Hopefully DP-Bobo-Pippo can provide the goods again

If Italy is to win the Euro 2004, then we cannot hope for ouropponents' players to get injured. Buffon, Cannavaro, Nesta, Zambrotta, Totti and Vieri are too important and probably irreplacable.

Cannavaro isn't as irreplaceable as Del Piero IMO, since we have players such as Legrottaglie and Ferrari who can take over from Canna whereas the next best option to DP on the left wing is Delvecchio (it would be Di Vaio or Di Natale IMO but Trap doesn't call them up).

You never know, if DP hadn't dictated the tempo in midfield like he did Wales may have had the courage to go forward more often and maybe even score a goal. Football is a funny game, and although most people don't realise it all of the time, a player's contribution can be telling even if they only score from a penalty.

This is going to be a tough match. I'd be happy for any victory....but the most important thing is what happens in the other match...Wales Vs Finland. If Wales lose, then it really doesn't make that much difference cause we are sure as hell going to beat Azerbeijan.

I don't like Panucci at all, but Trap's decision does have a good reason. Panucci is better at defending than at going forward, while it's the other way round for Oddo.

Trap obviously does not want to take any risks so he'll start a bit covered up and play Oddo if we need to push more later on in the game.
