Italy Back On Top Of The World

Italy have returned to the top of the FIFA World Rankings after their impressive 2-1 Euro 2008 qualifying victory in Ukraine last week.

The Azzurri had dropped down to third after the Copa America during the summer, but swapped places with previous leaders Brazil after this latest round of qualifiers.

Argentina remain in second place, while the top five is completed by European rivals Germany and Holland. France fall to sixth after a disastrous last couple of games, which saw them disappoint in a 0-0 draw with Italy and fall to a shock 1-0 home defeat to Scotland.

Of the British nations, England’s improvement under Steve McClaren sees them rise to ninth while Scotland’s historic victory in Paris pushes them up to 14th.

Italy’s next opponents Georgia are currently ranked 104th in the world. Italy face the Eastern Europeans on October 13 in a must-win match for the Azzurri.

Top 10:

1. Italy

2. Argentina

3. Brazil

4. Germany

5. Holland

6. France

7. Spain

8. Portugal

9. England

10. Croatia

Osvaldo gets Azzurrini call Thursday 4 October, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fiorentina young gun Pablo Daniel Osvaldo has been selected in Pierluigi Casiraghi’s Azzurrini squad for the October 12 Euro 2009 qualifier with Croatia.

Argentine-born hitman Osvaldo has an Italian passport and made the decision to represent Italy last week.

The ex-Lecce man announced himself to the Gigliati faithful spectacularly when he hit a brace in last weekend’s derby win over Livorno.

The inclusion of Osvaldo looks likely to come at the expense of teammate Arturo Lupoli who has struggled to make an impact in Serie A.

Italy’s youngsters have a 100 per cent record in qualification so far, but they laboured to wins over Albania and the Faroe Islands in September and will need to do better on October 12.

Italy Under-21 squad: Acquafresca (Cagliari), Bastrini (Sampdoria), Consigli (Rimini), Criscito (Juventus), De Ceglie (Siena), De Silvestri (Lazio), Giovinco (Empoli), Marchisio (Empoli), Marzoratti (Empoli), Pozzi (Empoli), Morosini (Vicenza), Motta (Torino), Osvaldo (Fiorentina), Paonessa (Avellino), Ranocchia (Arezzo), G Rossi (Villarreal), Cigarini (Parma), Dessena (Parma), M Rossi (Parma), Russotto (Treviso), Santacroce (Brescia), Sirigu (Cremonese)

It's so easy to get called up for a NT nowadays. Is he any good?

Osvaldo scored a spectacular brace on his Serie A debut last weekend in the 3-0 victory away to Livorno.

Italy take on Croatia in Chieti on Friday evening and travel to Athens for the Greece game on Tuesday October 16.
